Historical Solar Radiance Data
ID: 568Type: Data Compilation Collected by: NOAA
Total solar irradiance describes the radiant energy emitted by the sun over all wavelengths that falls each second on 1 square meter outside the earth's atmosphere--a quantity proportional to the "solar constant" observed earlier in this century. It measures the solar energy flux in Watts/square meter. The data contains six sets of satellite observations: values from NIMBUS-7, from the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) spacecraft, from the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS), from the NOAA-9 and 10 platforms, and from the Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS). Measurements span the periods: NIMBUS-7 16 Nov 78-13 Dec 93; SMM 16 Feb 80-01 Jun 89; ERBS 25 Oct 84-21 Dec 94; NOAA-9 23 Jan 85-20 Dec 89; NOAA-10 22 Oct 86-01 Apr 87; UARS 5 Oct 91-30 Sep 94.

MOA (MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) Image Map) [Terra and Aqua: MODIS]
ID: 627Type: Mosaic Sensor: MODIS Collected by: National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and the University of New Hampshire
Staff from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and the University of New Hampshire have assembled two digital image maps of surface morphology and optical snow grain size that cover the Antarctic continent and its surrounding islands. The MODIS Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) image maps are derived from composites of 260 MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) orbit swaths acquired between 20 November 2003 and 29 February 2004. The MOA provides a cloud-free view of the ice sheet, ice shelves, and land surfaces, and a quantitative measure of optical snow grain size for snow- or ice-covered areas. All land areas larger than a few hundred meters that are south of 60° S are included in the mosaic, as well as persistent fast ice regions and some grounded icebergs present near the coast in the 2003-2004 austral summer. The MOA surface morphology image map is derived from digitally processed MODIS Band 1 data. The optical snow grain size image is compiled using a normalized ratio of atmospherically corrected, calibrated band radiance data from Bands 1 and 2.

Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data
ID: 761Type: Data Compilation Collected by: NSIDC
This data set is generated from brightness temperature data derived from the following sensors: the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) -F8, -F11 and -F13 Special Sensor Microwave/Imagers (SSM/Is), and the DMSP-F17 Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS). The data are provided in the polar stereographic projection at a grid cell size of 25 x 25 km. This product is designed to provide a consistent time series of sea ice concentrations (the fraction, or percentage, of ocean area covered by sea ice) spanning the coverage of several passive microwave instruments. To aid in this goal, sea ice algorithm coefficients are changed to reduce differences in sea ice extent and area as estimated using the SMMR and SSM/I sensors. The data are generated using the NASA Team algorithm developed by the Oceans and Ice Branch, Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).

Landsat NDVI Trend (1984–2012) [Landsat]
ID: 934This research used a nominal peak greenness period, July 1 to August 31, to accommodate tundra of all regions for Landsat data selection. We only considered the terrain-corrected scenes, excluding scenes that have cloud cover more than 80%. As a result, a total of 87,762 Landsat scenes over 1271 Path/Row locations were selected from 1984-2012. Of these, 63% were from Landsat-5, as Landsat-5 provided the only data source for 1984-1998 and continued to acquire data until 2011. This work aims to provide a spatially complete view of the vegetation greenness change for all of Canada and Alaska by calculating per-pixel NDVI trend from all available 1984-2012 peak-summer Landsat-5 and -7 surface reflectance data.

AEGIS (All-Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey)
ID: 1045Type: Observed Data
Four orbiting telescopes, including Hubble, and four ground-based observatories sampled galaxies in a long, thin strip of sky to harvest clues about galaxy formation. Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) snapped several hundred images of the survey field, which astronomers wove together into a rich tapestry that showcases about 50,000 galaxies. The Hubble views yielded new information about how the appearance and structure of galaxies change at different distances out in the universe.

LIDAR [OSIRIS-REx: OLA]
ID: 1055Sensor: OLA
The OSIRIS-REx Laser Altimeter (OLA) is a scanning LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). LIDAR is similar to RADAR, but it uses light instead of radio waves to measure distance. OLA emitted laser pulses at the surface of Bennu, which reflected back from the surface and returned a portion of the laser pulse to the LIDAR detector. By carefully measuring the time difference between the outgoing pulse and the incoming pulse, the distance from the spacecraft to the surface of Bennu was computed using the speed of light. This allowed OLA to provide high-resolution topographical information about Bennu during the mission.

The OSIRIS-REx Camera Suite (OCAMS) consists of three cameras: PolyCam, MapCam, and SamCam. These cameras captured a wealth of imagery during OSIRIS-REx’s time at asteroid Bennu. To help mission planners select a site on Bennu for sample collection, OCAMS provided global image mapping of the asteroid’s surface and more detailed images of potential sample sites. OCAMS also recorded the sampling event during the touch-and-go (TAG) maneuver.

ID: 1162Type: Observed Data Sensor: SMMR, SSM/I, SSMIS Collected by: National Snow and Ice Data Center
The Sea Ice Index provides a quick look at Arctic- and Antarctic-wide changes in sea ice. It is a source for consistent, up-to-date sea ice extent and concentration images, in PNG format, and data values, in GeoTIFF and ASCII text files, from November 1978 to the present. Sea Ice Index images also depict trends and anomalies in ice cover calculated using a 30-year reference period of 1981 through 2010. The images and data are produced in a consistent way that makes the Index time-series appropriate for use when looking at long-term trends in sea ice cover. Both monthly and daily products are available. However, monthly products are better to use for long-term trend analysis because errors in the daily product tend to be averaged out in the monthly product and because day-to-day variations are often the result of short-term weather.

GMSL (Global Mean Sea Level) [Integrated Multi-Mission Ocean Altimeters: TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, OSTM/Jason-2, and Jason-3]
ID: 1185Type: Data Compilation Sensor: TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, OSTM/Jason-2, and Jason-3 Collected by: NASA Sea Level Change Program
This data contains Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) variations computed at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center under the auspices of the NASA Sea Level Change program. The GMSL was generated using the Integrated Multi-Mission Ocean Altimeter Data for Climate Research (http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/dataset/MERGED_TP_J1_OSTM_OST_ALL_V51). It combines Sea Surface Heights from the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, OSTM/Jason-2, Jason-3, and Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich missions to a common terrestrial reference frame with all inter-mission biases, range and geophysical corrections applied and placed onto a georeferenced orbit. This creates a consistent data record throughout time, regardless of the instrument used. Note, the most recent estimates of GMSL (post March 28, 2022) derived from the Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich mission are preliminary as validation and reprocessing procedures for Sentinel-6 are ongoing.

ODIAC (Open-source Data Inventory for Anthropogenic CO₂)
ID: 1186Type: Data Compilation
The Open-source Data Inventory for Anthropogenic CO₂ (A.K.A. ODIAC) is a global high-resolution emission data product for fossil fuel carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. ODAIC was originally developed under the Greenhouse gas Observing SATellite (GOSAT) project at Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). Since then, ODIAC has been maintained at the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) in collaboration with NASA, NIES and the Appalachian State University. ODIAC pioneered the combined use of space-based nighttime light data and individual power plant emission/location profiles to estimate the global spatial extent of fossil fuel CO₂ emissions. With the innovative emission modeling approach, ODIAC achieved the fine picture of global fossil fuel CO₂ emissions at a 1x1km, possibly the most beautiful global picture of human-made emissions. ODIAC was specifically designed for atmospheric CO₂ simulation applications, specially analyses using CO₂ data collected by satellites, such as GOSAT and NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory missions. ODIAC has been a key input data for NASA’s carbon modeling. As seen in a number of publications in the literature, the ODIAC emission data product has been also widely used in the international science research community for a variety of research applications (e.g. carbon budget analysis, urban emission study, observing system design experiments, and etc.) across various key policy relevant scales (global to local).

ICOADS (International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set)
ID: 1202Type: Observed Data Collected by: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
The International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) offers surface marine data spanning 1662-present, and simple gridded monthly summary products for 2° latitude x 2° longitude boxes back to 1800 (and 1°x1° boxes since 1960)—these data and products are freely distributed worldwide. As it contains observations from many different observing systems encompassing the evolution of measurement technology over hundreds of years, ICOADS is probably the most complete and heterogeneous collection of surface marine data in existence.

GHCNm (Global Historical Climatology Network monthly)
ID: 1203Collected by: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
The Global Historical Climatology Network monthly (GHCNm) dataset provides monthly climate summaries from thousands of weather stations around the world. The initial version was developed in the early 1990s, and subsequent iterations were released in 1997, 2011, and most recently in 2018. The period of record for each summary varies by station, with the earliest observations dating to the 18th century. Some station records are purely historical and are no longer updated, but many others are still operational and provide short time delay updates that are useful for climate monitoring. The current version (GHCNm v4) consists of mean monthly temperature data, as well as a beta release of monthly precipitation data.

NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 (NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections)
ID: 1220Type: Model
The NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 dataset is comprised of global downscaled climate scenarios derived from the General Circulation Model (GCM) runs conducted under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) and across all four “Tier 1” greenhouse gas emissions scenarios known as Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). The CMIP6 GCM runs were developed in support of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR6). This dataset includes downscaled projections from ScenarioMIP model runs for which daily scenarios were produced and distributed through the Earth System Grid Federation. The purpose of this dataset is to provide a set of global, high resolution, bias-corrected climate change projections that can be used to evaluate climate change impacts on processes that are sensitive to finer-scale climate gradients and the effects of local topography on climate conditions.

AVIRIS-3 L2B Greenhouse Gas Enhancements, Facility Instrument Collection
ID: 1229Type: Observed Data
This dataset contains Level 2B (L2b) enhancements of greenhouse gasses (GHG) derived from imagery collected by the Airborne Visible / Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-3 (AVIRIS-3) instrument. Products include methane and carbon dioxide enhancements, each with per-pixel uncertainties and sensitivities to the background. Concentration enhancements are estimated from radiance measurements using a column-wise adaptive matched filter approach, which searches each pixel's radiance spectrum for deviations that are characteristic of a GHG's absorption spectrum. This is the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) facility instrument archive of these data. The NASA AVIRIS-3 is a spectral mapping system that measures reflected radiance at 7.4-nm intervals in the Visible to Shortwave Infrared (VSWIR) spectral range from 390-2500 nm.

Antarctic Ice Cores (Antarctic Ice Cores Revised 800KYr CO2 Data)
ID: 1231Type: Data Compilation
The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica Dome ice core from Dome C (EDC) has allowed for the reconstruction of atmospheric CO2 concentrations for the last 800,000 years. Here we revisit the oldest part of the EDC CO2 record using different air extraction methods and sections of the core. For our established cracker system, we found an analytical artifact, which increases over the deepest 200 m and reaches 10.1 +/- 2.4 ppm in the oldest/deepest part. The governing mechanism is not yet fully understood, but it is related to insufficient gas extraction in combination with ice relaxation during storage and ice structure. The corrected record presented here resolves partly - but not completely - the issue with a different correlation between CO2 and Antarctic temperatures found in this oldest part of the records. In addition, we provide here an update of 800,000 years atmospheric CO2 history including recent studies covering the last glacial cycle.

Wildfire Burned Area (United States Total Wildland Fires and Acres)
ID: 1232Type: Observed Data
The National Interagency Coordination Center at NIFC compiles annual wildland fire statistics for federal and state agencies. This information is provided through Situation Reports, which have been in use for several decades. Prior to 1983, the federal wildland fire agencies did not track official wildfire data using current reporting processes. As a result, there is no official data prior to 1983 posted on this site.
