Drawing on the region’s recent history of military dictatorship and democratic transition, this edited volume explores how abortion rights demands fit with current democratic agendas.
With a focus on Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, the book’s contributors delve into the complex reality of abortion through the examination of the discourses, strategies, successes, and challenges of abortion rights movements. Assembling a multiplicity of voices and experiences, the contributions illuminate key dimensions of abortion rights struggles: health aspects, litigation efforts, legislative debates, party politics, digital strategies, grassroots mobilization, coalition-building, affective and artistic components, and movement-countermovement dynamics. The book takes an approach that is sensitive to social inequalities and to the transnational aspects of abortion rights struggles in each country. It bridges different scales of analysis, from abortion experiences at the micro level of the clinic or the home to the macro sociopolitical and cultural forces that shape individual lives.
This is an important intervention suitable for students and scholars of abortion politics, democracy in Latin America, gender and sexuality, and women’s rights.

Considering the complex and even contradictory social processes that the region is experiencing today, many Latin American authors are turning to affect to find a key to understand our present situation, to revisit our history, and to imagine new possibilities for the future. This tendency has shown such a specificity and sometimes departure from northern productions that it compels us to focus more deeply on its own arguments, methods, and critical contributions. This volume features essays that explore the particularities of Latin American ways of thinking about affect and how they can shed new light into our understanding of, gender, sexuality and politics.

Based on their extensive practice of providing information and accompanying later abortion, the Socorristas have developed this text, which systematically captures their experience and knowledge on the topic. The book presents the experiences and reflections of 23 women who had second-trimester medical abortions and 16 feminist activists who support and accompany this practice. The study was conducted by Colectiva La Revuelta, which is part of Socorristas en Red, the national Socorrista network in Argentina. The English translation was supported by Women Help Women and inroads.

responderemos a esa demanda ética.

THE VOTING HAND. VISUALITY AND AFFECT IN A TRANSNATIONAL SYMBOL OF ABORTION RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN LATIN AMERICA´S SOUTHERN CONE
Abstract
This article presents a study on the first transnational symbol of the movement for abortion rights in Latin America’s Southern Cone: the “voting hand” for legal abortion. The emblem emerged in Uruguay at the beginning of the 2000s. Around 2010, the symbol turned green and was adopted by the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe and Free Abortion in Argentina. As of 2015, the voting hand also accompanied the process that led to the legalization of abortion on three grounds in Chile. The analysis focuses on the role of symbols and affects in the activism for abortion rights. The voting hand was central for the construction of collective identity and political attunement in the movement. This emblem also magnetized hopes associated with democracy and a deep sense of political willfulness. Results are based in documentary research in various archives and in conversations with key informants from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Feminist Feelings
This paper examines the paradoxical relationship between feminisms, affects, feelings, and emotions. Although in the last few years the so called affective turn enabled feminist theories to delve into the study of the emotional and affective dimensions, we shall show that different strands of feminism have been reflecting on feelings for a long time. We explore three specific topics in which feminist theories have incorporated the study of emotions: subjectivity, epistemology, and politics. The paper ends with a series of reflections and questions about how gender and affects have been considered by Latin American feminist theories and praxis.

Abortion Rights in Images: Visual Interventions by Activist Organizations in Argentina

Political discourse relies not only on the persuasiveness of words, rational argumentation, and ethical appeals but also on the deployment of images. Political disputes around abortion are paradigmatic of the crucial role that images can play. While conservative groups have deployed powerful imagery to present their moral and political convictions, abortion rights organizations are increasingly intervening in the political arena with visual artifacts. Places where abortion is illegal and where activists have been struggling to repeal punitive abortion laws seem particularly well suited for examining the visual repertoires of abortion rights activists. Argentina is a case in point. This article interrogates the visual production of three significant organizations for abortion rights in Argentina: the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion; Lesbians and Feminists for the Decriminalization of Abortion; and the Network of Socorristas (first responders). What kinds of images, symbols, and aesthetic strategies have they crafted? What meanings do these visuals convey? What affects do they mobilize? How do these images fit, contradict, or exceed vital dimensions of Argentina’s political culture? We examine abortion rights images along three lines: first, the meaning of key symbols of the organizations; second, emerging notions of abortion safety; and finally, the struggle for abortion rights in relation to human rights, citizenship, and democracy. We consider the potency and limitations of the organizations’ visuals, contributing an analysis of local experiences in relation to abortion rights activism as a topic of transnational relevance.

The analysis of visual productions in favor of legal abortion reveals the great efforts made to generate social empathy towards women and to destigmatize abortion. In recent years, original visual works that associate abortion with affects such as joy, relief, and pride have gained centrality. However—in a region where abortion continues to be largely clandestine, insecure and even prosecuted—organizations are constantly creating images that refer to injustices associated with incarceration and deaths due to abortion. Creating images about these forms of extreme social violence is a delicate task. Far from all forms of victimization, the visual productions analyzed here represent, in many different ways, the women´s incarceration and deaths for abortion as a call to political action. Pain, affliction and grief are powerful affects that activate political forms of memory, action and imagination in pursuit of reproductive justice.
