Key research themes
1. How is the concept of 'newness' constructed and experienced in new media across sociocultural contexts?
This research theme focuses on unpacking the socio-cultural construction of 'newness' in new media, moving beyond technological determinism to examine how media users interpret and integrate new technologies within historical and cultural continuities. It explores how new media relates dialectically with older media forms and how identities and communication practices are reshaped through emerging participant structures.

This paper provides an entry into a decolonial approach to AI driven music and sound arts by describing an ongoing artistic research project Dhvāni. The project is a series of responsive, self-regulating, and autonomous installations driven by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and incorporating ritual and sacred sounds from South Asia. Such mélange re-emphasizes and advocates for the values of interconnectivity, codependence, network, and community with a decolonial approach. By giving the AI an autonomous agency, the project aims to reimagine the future of AI with an inter-subjective reciprocity in human-machine assemblages transcending the technologically deterministic approach to AI-driven live art, media arts and music. Through unpacking the project, this paper underscores the necessity to dehegemonize the AI-driven music field towards a transcultural exchange, thereby transcend the field's Eurocentric bias.

This essay examines Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan (USLP), launched in 2010 and concluded in 2020, as a landmark case study in corporate sustainability change management. Facing significant environmental and social pressures across a global value chain spanning approximately 150,000 direct suppliers and over 400 brands in 190 countries, Unilever designed an ambitious ten-year initiative structured around three pillars: improving health and well-being, halving its environmental footprint, and enhancing stakeholder livelihoods. The analysis situates the USLP within its macroeconomic and organizational context, including the post-financial crisis regulatory landscape, growing ESG investor pressure, and the governance shift catalyzed by CEO Paul Polman. The initiative is assessed through four established management frameworks: Porter and Kramer's Creating Shared Value, Elkington's Triple Bottom Line, Kotter's 8-Step Change Model, and Freeman's Stakeholder Theory. While the USLP achieved notable operational milestones, including zero manufacturing waste to landfill and expanded hygiene programs, it fell short on key supply chain commitments such as sustainable palm oil sourcing. Critical tensions are identified between relative and absolute environmental decoupling, between systemic ambition and governance fragility, and between CEO-driven transformation and long-term institutional anchoring. The USLP is presented as both a model of strategically integrated sustainability leadership and a cautionary reflection on the structural limits of firm-level action in the absence of industry-wide systemic change.

This study investigates the altmetric performance and citation trends of highly cited open access (OA) publications, shedding light on the interplay between online metrics and scholarly impact. Utilising data from Dimensions and Scopus databases, a cohort of 25 influential OA publications was selected from a pool of over 44 million publications. The selected articles, authored by 83 individuals from 11 countries and 45 organisations, displayed significant multi-author collaboration. These publications collectively cited 917 external sources and garnered over 1.6 million citations each from both Dimensions and Scopus databases. Temporal analysis revealed publication trends spanning from 1951 to 2018, with articles, conference papers and reviews constituting the most prevalent document types. A comprehensive survey of source journals showcased diverse disciplinary origins. Notably, four standout publications-"Protein Measurement with the Folin Phenol Reagent," "Deep Residual Learning for Image Recognition," "Density-functional thermochemistry. III. "The role of exact exchange", and "Development of the Colle-Salvetti correlation-energy formula into a functional of the electron density"amassed over 80,000 citations each, affirming their significant impact. The correlation between altmetric metrics and Scopus citations was examined, revealing mixed associations. Higher view counts were linked to increased citations, underlining the role of initial visibility. However, usage and captures metrics displayed no substantial correlation with citations. In contrast, mentions and social media metrics demonstrated a significant positive relationship with citations, underscoring the

Justyna TREPKA-STAROSTA Agnieszka ROSZKOWSKA Transformacja ustrojowa zapoczątkowana w latach dziewięćdziesiątych przy niosła wiele zmian w strukturze politycznej, społecznej, ekonomicznej i kulturo wej Polski.

A key front for ethical questions in artificial intelligence, and computer science more generally, is teaching students how to engage with the questions they will face in their professional careers based on the tools and technologies we teach them.  In past work (and current teaching) we have advocated for the use of science fiction as an appropriate tool which enables AI researchers to engage students and the public on the current state and potential impacts of AI. We present teaching suggestions for E.M. Forster's 1909 story, "The Machine Stops," to teach topics in computer ethics.  In particular, we use the story to examine ethical issues related to being constantly available for remote contact, physically isolated, and dependent on a machine --- all without mentioning computer games or other media to which students have strong emotional associations. We give a high-level view of common ethical theories and indicate how they inform the questions raised by the story ...

ReSpace is a teaching module, which entices students in a playful way to work with computers and motivates them to think more deeply about the abstract idea of space. The goal of ReSpace is to enhance the concept of space by augmenting its content with additional levels of information like statements about emotions, by referring to senses, delineating impressions or telling stories and inducing memories. ReSpace takes advantage of the possibilities offered by virtual environments in the transfer of information and suggests space as a metaphor for the communication of ideas, knowledge and experiences about space. In this paper the module ReSpace taught by the author is described. Its central theme is the representation and communication of one's notion, perception, and interpretation of space with the help of a 3D, interactive, virtual, environment.

Media Ownership factor in Nigeria, as the case in many countries, plays a significant role in determining the extent to which the audience perceive media organizations as being socially responsible especially as they service the democratic system. Existing studies have focused on the role of ownership generally in the media industry in Nigeria. However, such studies have given little attention to how public and private radio stations have fared in their social responsibilities to the public. Therefore, with the specific focus on Oyo State, which is one of the states with the highest concentration of radio stations in Nigeria, this study was designed to comparatively examine how public and private radio stations in the State fare in the performance of their expected social responsibilities. This study adopted the Social Responsibility Theory and combined Content Analysis and Survey as research methods. Content analysis revealed that the programme contents of the selected radio stations fairly meet up with the social responsibilities expected of the mass media as there are more of non-sponsored programmes than sponsored programmes in the stations' programme schedules.

This paper seeks to historicize Twitter within a longer historical framework of diaries to better understand not only Twitter but broader communication practices and patterns. Based on a review of historical literature regarding 18th and 19th century diaries, we created a content analysis coding scheme to analyze a random sample of publicly available Twitter messages according to themes in the diaries. Findings suggest commentary and accounting style diaries are the most popular narrative styles on Twitter. Despite important differences between the diaries and Twitter, this analysis suggests long-standing social needs to account, reflect, communicate, and share with others. Communication technologies and services are typically characterized by their "newness". Yet new is a relative term. Research often compares "new" communication technologies with their recent technological predecessors. For example, television was compared with radio when it was first introduced (Barnouw, 1966). More recently scholars have looked to historical communication systems and services to reveal insights into contemporary communication issues

Political communication is the process through which political actors, media institutions, and citizens create, exchange, and interpret messages that shape public opinion, political behavior, and democratic life. It encompasses how governments communicate policies, how media select and frame political information, how campaigns design strategic messages, and how citizens engage through traditional and digital platforms. Political communication also involves persuasion, public relations, public opinion formation, and the influence of emotions, identity, and cognitive biases. In modern societies, it is shaped by changing media systems, global information flows, and the rise of digital networks, making it essential for understanding how political meaning is constructed, contested, and communicated.

Introduction

Den teoretiska referensram består av följande teorier: Media Richness modellen samt de två artiklarna On using organizational knowledge capabilities to assist organizational learning samt Virtual worlds as platforms for communities of pratices från antologin Knowledge management and organizational learning.

Visual social media platforms, such as Instagram, have impacted the way public figures communicate with their audiences and manage their reputation, allowing for a two-way flow of information that provides nearly simultaneous feedback from the public. In this context, our study aims to investigate the effectiveness of crisis communication strategies employed by celebrities on Instagram and how they shape public perception. Utilizing Benoit's Image Repair Theory, the research employs netnography and qualitative content analysis to examine 15 crisis statements issued by A-and B-list celebrities between 2020 and 2023, each paired with the top 30 user comments (N = 450) under their posts. The results indicate that famous figures most commonly use mortification, or expressing remorse, and this strategy receives the most positive audience feedback on the platform. Conversely, audiences react negatively to denial, demonstrating the risks when celebrities evade responsibility in such situations. Finally, the study shows the importance of celebrities' sincerity, transparency, and pre-crisis reputation in influencing public sentiment on social media during a crisis.

The Politics and Democracy course explores the fundamental principles, structures, and processes that underpin democratic governance. Students examine the evolution of democratic systems, political institutions, electoral systems, and the roles of political parties, interest groups, and civil society. This book also addresses the formation of political culture, public opinion, and the influence of traditional and digital media, including social media, on political behavior. Key themes include the ethics of governance, transparency, accountability, and the challenges of corruption. Additionally, this book situates democracy in a global context, exploring international organizations, globalization, and democracy promotion. Through case studies, simulations, and practical projects, students develop analytical, evaluative, and communication skills necessary to understand and participate in democratic systems effectively.

Since the emergence of the World Wide Web the media ecology has gone through deep transformations. While the broadcasting paradigm was displaced from its hegemonic position by the networking paradigm, the "old media species" are constrained to compete with the "new" ones and must adapt to the new conditions of the media ecology. Never in the long history of Homo sapiens has our social-technological network gone through such an accelerated and unpredictable shift. In this context the chapter reflects on the possibilities of a new discipline -media evolution -in grade of dealing with past, contemporary, and future transformations of the media ecology. After introducing how the Darwinian model was applied in the analysis of technology evolution, the chapter presents a general overview of approaches that should be part of any theoretical conversation about media evolution: Levinson's anthropotropic theory of media mutations, Logan's reflections of media evolution from the perspective of language, complexity, and emergent phenomena, and Manovich's contributions around the computer metamedium and its hybridizations. The chapter concludes with a map of interlocutors for the construction of a media evolution theory and presents a first list of possible methodologies to apply in this emergent field.

From the 20th century to the present, rapid advancements in science and technology have forced significant changes in established socio-cultural, economic, and political structures, institutions, and relationship patterns, prompting radical decisions to adapt to the new process. Within the democratic and pluralistic ecosystem created by new communication technologies, traditional viewing environments such as cinema and television have begun to differentiate themselves through digital systems. Among the media tools that have come to the forefront in this process are digital platforms. Globally operating digital platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus shape viewers around specific productions and genres through their algorithm-based recommendation systems, while often neglecting quality cinema and aesthetic selectivity. In this regard, the locally developed digital platform MUBI creates an alternative viewing culture, particularly through its curatorial structure, artistic film selection, and viewer relations, in opposition to the policies of its global competitors that limit and shape viewer taste. The main objective of this qualitative study is to analyze user comments on films watched on the MUBI platform to reveal the intellectual approaches and cultural imprints of viewers' aesthetic stances. In this regard, MUBI user reviews of Nuri Bilge Ceylan's award-winning film Winter Sleep (2014) were included in the research sample and examined in detail and comprehensively using content analysis methods. Based on the findings, user reviews indicated that the film's storytelling is constructed with the depth of literary texts and philosophical perspectives, that psychological and sociological analyses attempt to reveal the inner world of the characters, and that the director adds his own unique touches to the film with his cinematographic narrative style.

Turkish television drama, widely known as the dizi, has emerged as one of the most significant transnational screen phenomena of the twenty-first century. As Turkish television has expanded beyond its national broadcast context into a globally circulating cultural industry, scholarship on the field has also grown rapidly. Foundational contributions by scholars such as Arzu Öztürkmen, Yeşim Kaptan, Ece Algan, and Ece Vitrinel have helped establish the key coordinates of Turkish television studies. Works such as Öztürkmen's The Delight of Turkish Dizi: Memory, Genre and Politics of Television in Turkey and Kaptan and Algan's Television in Turkey: Local Production, Transnational Expansion and Political Aspirations, together with subsequent special issues and articles on transnational production, audience reception, fan cultures, and platform-era transformations, have made it possible to think of Turkish television as a distinct and increasingly consolidated field of inquiry.

more
This essay develops a structural account of how consequence has been transformed across contemporary systems of representation, circulation, and institutional procedure. It argues that consequence—understood as the production of binding effects that limit what can follow—has not disappeared but has been systematically converted into non-terminal forms. Across domains including art, media, and institutional governance, actions no longer produce decisive outcomes. Instead, they generate further circulation, documentation, and procedural continuation.
The analysis identifies three interlocking transformations. First, representation increasingly operates as a highlight mechanism, selecting and compressing events into legible forms that privilege visibility over resolution. Second, circulation reorganizes these representations within continuous streams, where appearance replaces evaluation and persistence replaces conclusion. Third, institutional procedure absorbs both representation and circulation into administrative systems that route decisions without producing accountable endpoints.
Together, these transformations produce a system that operates without effective negative feedback. Exposure does not terminate behavior; critique does not enforce consequence; decision-making is displaced into processes that perpetuate themselves. The result is a structural condition in which activity persists while resolution disappears. The essay concludes by proposing that contemporary culture must be understood not as a failure of judgment, but as a reconfiguration of the mechanisms through which consequence is produced and withheld.

more
In the American political process, news discourse concerning public policy issues is carefully constructed. This occurs in part because both politicians and interest groups take an increasingly proactive approach to amplify their views of what an issue is about. However, news media also play an active role in framing public policy issues. Thus, in this article, news discourse is conceived as a sociocognitive process involving all three players: sources, journalists, and audience members operating in the universe of shared culture and on the basis of socially defined roles. Framing analysis is presented as a constructivist approach to examine news discourse with the primary focus on conceptualizing news texts into empirically operationalizable dimensions-syntactical, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures-so that evidence of the news media's framing of issues in news texts may be gathered. This is considered an initial step toward analyzing the news discourse process as a whole. Finally, an extended empirical example is provided to illustrate the applications of this conceptual framework of news texts. Keywords News, issue discourse, discourse analysis, framing analysts Much of the recent research in political communication deals with one or more of the following three questions. First, how do the news media "set the frame in which citizens discuss public events" (Tuchman, 1978, p. ix) and consequently "narrow the available political alternatives" (p. 156)? Second, how do politicians and advocacy groups actively "court" the media to polish their images and frame debates over public policies (see )? Third, how do audiences process news information actively and construct meanings using their preexisting cognitive representations (e.g., ? One nagging problem for research in these areas has been how to convincingly link news texts to both production and consumption processes . This article presents a framing analysis approach to this problem. The basic idea is to view news texts as a system of organized signifying elements that both

The concept of marine protected areas is currently under scrutiny by members of the U.S. Congress, coastal natural resource management agencies, special interest stakeholder groups, and the public. As a surrogate for public opinion polls, a media content analysis was performed for news stories related to marine protected areas. The analysis examined more than 25,000 on-line newspaper, news wire, and radio and television broadcast news stories from 1995 to 2001 for expressions of four broad categories of uses and values associated with marine protected areas, expressions of favorable and unfavorable attitudes associated with marine protected areas, and the stakeholder groups involved in the discussion. Ecological uses and values were expressed more often than social, recreational, and commercial uses and values. Favorable attitudes were expressed more frequently than unfavorable attitudes. Over the period of analysis, 1995 to 2001, a gradual upward trend was found in frequencies of expressions of ecological, social, recreational, and commercial uses and values. A gradual upward trend was found for relative frequency of favorable attitudes and a gradual downward trend for unfavorable attitudes. For the five broad stakeholder groups, marine protected areas were mentioned most frequently in connection to government, followed by nongovernmental groups, the public, industry, and academia. This paper describes the study methods and findings of the analysis, and offers management implications and considerations for future research.

more
This article argues that the analytic of pharmacotic war can render visible a logic of ritual sacrifice in the US military's use of games to attract, produce, and recycle war-fighters. Identifying the ancient framing of the pharmakon-a substance or process that functions as at once drug, poison, and cure-it shows how games function paradoxically to draw in, produce, and rehabilitate military life. The article makes this case by tracing the roots of Kenneth MacLeish's 'churn of mobilization and demobilization' beyond the military's instrumental calculations of institutional self-perpetuation, showing that this churn functions according to a logic of pharmacotic sacrifice that is not incidental to, but rather built into, their routine operation. It argues that (ex-)war-fighters function as a contemporary equivalent of the ancient pharmakoi, scapegoated and sacrificed figures into whom a polis poured its guilt and dysfunction in an act of ritual purification. Though rejecting any linear genealogy or transhistorical Western way of war, it identifies powerful resonances between the ancient pharmakoi and (ex-)war-fighters today. Drawing on extensive interviews with US military gamers and veterans, the article sheds light on the growing influence of games on the attraction, production, and recycling of (ex-)war-fighters in the 21st century. At the same time, by tracing the purificatory expulsion of war-fighters, it contributes a novel theorization of the pharmacotic logic of the US military's war-making apparatus.

Based on the world-theoretical model of the
paraverse, the issue explores which parallel worlds
of curating, exhibiting and collecting art have
emerged in digital spaces, and how these can be
situated in relation to the familiar physical-
analogue world of exhibiting and collecting art
— whether as an extension of existing institutional
practices or a parallel-world phenomenon of a
subversive, institution-critical digital culture.
How does the practice of curating art — pre-digital,
algorithmically generated and minted art — change
through its migration into virtual spaces, cross-
realities and automated scenographies, and what
is the impact of generative AI imaging on it?
What new display, participation and mediation
possibilities do digital and net-based exhibition
formats offer? How are public and private collection
strategies and practices changing through the
introduction of NFTs and blockchain technology?
The Paraverse issue brings together diverse
theoretical, practical and empirical perspectives
from researchers, curators, and artists. Under
discussion are the digital image politics of curating,
showing and mediating art and cultural heritage,
the blockchain-induced decentralization and
commoning of exhibition-making, collecting, and
art sales. In addition, the issue addresses the
potentials and risks of artistic value creation and
value preservation in the collective space of
virtuality, and the future of art-curating in the age
of artificial intelligence.
