The dedicatory inscription examined here was found in the ruins of the early Christian basilica a... more The dedicatory inscription examined here was found in the ruins of the early Christian basilica at Agios Ioannis region of Agathonisi island in the Dodecanese, Greece. Through the study it turns out that it mentions the καλλιέργεια (decoration) of the church and a first name, read as Ψίμιος. We propose that the latter derives from the toponym Εψιμιά of the neighboring island of Patmos.

The church of Saint Mamas is a small, domed structure that lies close to Menetes village in Karpa... more The church of Saint Mamas is a small, domed structure that lies close to Menetes village in Karpathos. It preserves most of its painted decoration, consisting of the scene of the Ascension of Christ on the dome and saintly figures on the rest of the surfaces. A dedicatory inscription, read here for the first time, dates the frescoes in 1312/3 and places them in the broader context of precisely dated monuments. Certain features of the iconographic program, such as the presence of healer saints (Panteleemon and Kyprianos), but mostly of the officiating Pope Sylvester and the passage used in the codex of Christ Pantocrator on the apse of the altar, lead us to interesting conclusions concerning, among others, the perception of anti-latin propaganda in the islands of the South Aegean. Also, the stylistic affinities between the art of Karpathos and Crete corroborate the diachronic interrelations between the two islands. The church of Saint Mamas is an exceptional example, and one of the few byzantine decorated monuments which survive on the island.

The complex of the churches of Saint Constantine and Saint Mamas is located at Missochori, close ... more The complex of the churches of Saint Constantine and Saint Mamas is located at Missochori, close to the capital of the island of Nissyros, Greece. The first church preserves wall-paintings dated to the end of the twelfth century, shared donation of two monasteries/churches. The paintings are partly repainted, probably in 1318/1319. Both the murals and the two inscriptions of the church provide new evidence concerning mediaeval Nissyros.

They were found in excavations or are random finds of exact known provenance. Their publication, placing them in a wider context and co-examining them with the other finds from the excavations, offers new historical data concerning the ecclesiastical history of the island and its position in the Byzantine Empire.

This small article deals with the presence of medieval Cypriot icons and artifacts at the Aegean ... more This small article deals with the presence of medieval Cypriot icons and artifacts at the Aegean islands. The origin of one icon at Paros, three at Amorgos, an icon and a bema door from Patmos and one icon from Rhodes are discussed here, considering that the only indisputably Cypriot icon is a Deesis one, found after works of restoration at the church of the Dormition of the Virgin at Trianda (Ialysos), Rhodes. Finally, some remarks are made about the similarities and the connection between medieval Rhodian and Cypriot painting.

The barrel-vaulted single-nave church of the Saviour lies at Messaria, a settlement in the vicini... more The barrel-vaulted single-nave church of the Saviour lies at Messaria, a settlement in the vicinity of Megalo Chorio of Telos. Only parts of its mural decoration have survived; the Deēsis on the conch and officiating bishops on the hemicycle of the apse, and parts of the scenes of the Annunciation, the Ascension and the Lithos on the north and south stage of the vault. The nine-verse inscription at the Deēsis offers the names of the donors and the year 1423/24, making the decoration of the church of the Saviour the only one securely dated of the Hospitaller period on Telos.

Στην παρούσα μελέτη εξετάζονται εννέα μολυβδόβουλλα που προέρχονται από ανασκαφές της Ρόδου, ή αποτελούν τυχαία ευρήματα με ακριβή τόπο εύρεσης. Η δημοσίευση και η ένταξή τους σε ένα ευρύτερο πλαίσιο, σε συσχετισμό με τα συνευρήματα, παρέχει νέα ιστορικά στοιχεία για την εκκλησιαστική ιστορία του νησιού, αλλά και τη σχέση του με την λοιπή Βυζαντινή επικράτεια.
