Overview

"Goodbye My Princess" is a Chinese mainland historical romance television series that aired in 2019, directed by Li Huizhu. The series is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Fei Wo Si Cun. It tells the tragic and entangled love story between Li Chengyin, the crown prince of the Feng Dynasty, and Xiao Feng, the Ninth Princess of the Western Liang, interwoven with national enmity and personal grudges. The series garnered widespread attention and sparked heated discussions after its broadcast due to its exquisite costumes and production design, magnificent on-location filming, high fidelity to the original plot, and outstanding performances by the cast. Although the plot is notorious for its heart-wrenching romance, its profound portrayal of the characters' destinies and tragic aesthetics earned recognition from the audience. It received a rating of 7.8 on Douban, becoming a representative work among historical romance dramas in recent years.

Plot

The story revolves around Qu Xiao Feng, the Ninth Princess of Western Liang. To maintain peace, she travels to the Central Plains for a political marriage but unexpectedly jumps into the River of Forgetfulness on the eve of her wedding, losing all her memories. Simultaneously, Li Chengyin, a prince of the Feng Dynasty, suffers a similar fate. After losing her memory, Xiao Feng enters the imperial palace under a new identity and meets Li Chengyin, who is using the alias Gu Xiao Wu. They fall in love again. However, as their memories gradually return, the cruel truth is revealed: Li Chengyin is none other than Gu Xiao Wu, who once exploited Xiao Feng's feelings and caused the annihilation of her maternal clan in his pursuit of power. An insurmountable blood feud lies between them.

Against the backdrop of grand political struggles within the dynasty, Li Chengyin maneuvers step by step through schemes and intrigues, eventually ascending to the position of Crown Prince and residing in the Eastern Palace (Dong Gong). Xiao Feng finds herself trapped in an impossible dilemma between love and hatred, torn between her deep, inextinguishable affection and the torment of national and familial vengeance. Their relationship is repeatedly tormented by suspicion, conspiracies, and an irretrievable past. The series delicately depicts the intense conflict between personal emotions and the greater good of the nation, ultimately leading to a tragic and poignant ending. It profoundly illustrates the sense of fatalism encapsulated in the line, "More dangerous than the imperial palace is the Eastern Palace; harder than being the emperor is being the crown prince."
