The series stars Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan in leading roles, with Zhou Ye, Ma Wenyuan, Sun Xilun, and others in supporting roles. It was exclusively broadcast on the Youku platform. The series consists of 36 episodes and holds a Douban rating of 8.5, making it the highest-rated historical drama on Douban in 2021. It is hailed as a benchmark work of the new "Guofeng" (national style) wuxia genre.

Within just 38 days of its premiere, nearly 350,000 users participated in its evaluation on Douban, with nearly half awarding it a five-star rating. The Youku platform rating soared to 9.2. Its popularity skyrocketed during the broadcast, making it the first phenomenal hit drama of 2021. Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan rose to overnight fame through this series, catapulting from relative obscurity to top-tier actors.

Plot

Zhou Zishu (played by Zhang Zhehan) was once the leader of Tian Chuang, a secret assassination organization for the imperial court. To escape this murderous organization, he willingly endured the punishment of the "Seven Apertures Three Autumn Nails," leaving him with only three years to live. After leaving the organization, he assumed the alias Zhou Xu and wandered aimlessly, intending to live out his remaining days in freedom.

During his travels, he encounters the enigmatic and elegant Wen Kexing (played by Gong Jun). Outwardly a refined gentleman, Wen Kexing is actually the fearsome master of the Ghost Valley. Having grown up in the valley and witnessed his parents' brutal deaths, his heart is filled with hatred for the hypocritical world, and he is determined to destroy this duplicitous martial arts society.

The two become entangled in conflict due to the appearance of the Glazed Armor at a martial arts gathering. The Glazed Armor is said to hold the secret of the legendary martial arts treasure, the "Word of Honor," sparking a life-and-death struggle among various martial arts factions. As Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing face the dangers of the jianghu together, they gradually build deep trust and rapport.

As the plot unfolds, their hidden identities and pasts slowly come to light. Wen Kexing discovers a deeper conspiracy behind his parents' deaths, while the poison from Zhou Zishu's "Seven Apertures Three Autumn Nails" continues to erode his body. Their relationship evolves from mutual suspicion to profound trust, ultimately becoming each other's sole salvation.

Reception and Impact

The success of Word of Honor exceeded all expectations. The series had almost no pre-release promotion, and its leads were not A-list actors at the time. However, thanks to its high-quality production, excellent script adaptation, and outstanding performances, it quickly sparked heated discussions on social media.

Its Douban rating started at 8.6, later climbing to 8.8, and eventually stabilized at 8.5. The drama is credited with firing the first shot for 2021's hit dramas. The performances of Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan were highly praised by audiences, and their character portrayals are considered one of the most successful dual-male leads in recent wuxia dramas.

The series also sparked a fan culture phenomenon on par with a concert tour. Tickets for the fan meeting held by the production team in Shanghai sold out within seconds, generating fervent online and offline interaction. This became one of the most influential events in the 2021 Chinese entertainment industry.

Production Features

A standout feature of Word of Honor's production is its presentation of traditional Chinese aesthetics. From costume design and set decoration to fight choreography and musical scoring, the entire series exudes a rich classical charm. The fight scenes incorporate the beauty of dance, balancing visual appeal with artistic quality.

Screenwriter Xiao Chu meticulously adapted the original novel. While preserving the core character relationships and plot framework, she expanded the wuxia world-building and added more intricate storylines of jianghu vendettas, making the narrative more substantial and three-dimensional. The series' dialogue was also widely acclaimed for its elegant, classical style infused with a modern sensibility, with many lines becoming popular internet catchphrases.

Cultural Significance

Word of Honor demonstrated the enduring vitality and appeal of Chinese wuxia dramas. In a market dominated by xianxia (immortal heroes) and urban dramas, this series won audience affection with its authentic wuxia spirit and high production standards, earning the title of a representative work of the new "Guofeng" wuxia genre.

Its success also provided new insights for the film and television adaptation of Chinese web novel IPs. Priest's original novel Faraway Wanderers is not her most famous work, but the careful adaptation and production transformed it into a phenomenal series whose influence surpassed that of the source material.
