Overview

"Let Me Shine" is an urban romance drama produced by Tencent Video, co-produced by Jinhe Film & Television and Huayun Culture, directed by Chen Chang, and written by Ye Yang, Li Wei, and Yang Dan. The series stars Zhao Lusi and William Chan in leading roles, with Wan Peng, Guan Zijing, Wang Yiyao, and Zhong Yating in main roles, and Tang Xiaotian in a special starring role. It consists of 40 episodes.

The drama premiered in mainland China on September 26, 2025, with a Douban rating of 6.5. Although the rating is not high, it is the first mainland Chinese drama in nearly six years to top Taiwan's annual drama chart, surpassing local Taiwanese dramas and popular Korean dramas to become the TOP 1 of the 2025 Top Ten Popular Dramas.

Plot

Xu Yan (played by Zhao Lusi), who grew up with her grandmother, has unresolved issues with her parents, making her grandmother the only light in her life. Stubborn by nature, she worked hard to get into a top university from her small town and struggled alone for nearly a decade before finally gaining a foothold in the big city.

However, beneath the perfect mask woven by lies lies a girl's longing for love and her struggle against fate. Xu Yan and Shen Haoming (played by William Chan) engage in an emotional game of love and conflict. The drama touches on multiple social issues such as family of origin, mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationships, and workplace struggles, creating intense dramatic conflicts.

"Let Me Shine" uses an unconventional narrative to depict the struggles and growth of contemporary urban women caught between marriage, career, and self-identity.

Reception

"Let Me Shine" has a Douban rating of 6.5, lower than "The Legend of the Hidden Sea" (7.1) and "A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality" (7.5) from the same year. However, the drama performed exceptionally well in terms of viewership ratings and overseas influence.

It is the highest-ranked work by a female actress on the 2025 Effective Broadcast Drama list (Zhao Lusi, effective broadcast drama score 87). Its satellite TV ratings rose from 0.1 to 0.6, and it consistently remained at the top of its time slot despite a challenging broadcast schedule.

Cultural Impact

"Let Me Shine" is regarded as another hit urban drama following "The First Half of My Life," "All Is Well," and "Nothing But Thirty." The drama touches on several social hot topics such as family of origin, mother-in-law conflicts, and women in the workplace, sparking widespread discussion.

Although Zhao Lusi's performance in the drama was questioned by some viewers, its massive overseas success proves its topicality and appeal. In Taiwan, the drama topped the 2025 annual drama chart, becoming another successful case of Chinese cultural export.
