Overview

Nanjing Photo Studio is a Chinese war drama film released in 2025, directed by young filmmaker Shen Ao. Set against the historical backdrop of the fall of Nanjing in 1937, the film examines the devastation of war on the lives and spirits of ordinary people, as well as the faint glimmers of humanity and resilience in extreme circumstances, through the unique perspective of a common photo studio. Upon its release, the film received widespread critical acclaim. Its profound historical reflection, superb acting, and poetic cinematography made it one of the significant works in Chinese cinema that year, earning a high rating of 8.8 on Douban.

Plot

The story takes place in Nanjing in 1937. Young photographer Chen Mo (played by Liu Haoran) runs the family-owned "Time Photo Studio," obsessed with capturing beautiful moments in life through his lens. His close friend, newspaper reporter Lu Ziming (played by Wang Chuanjun), is full of passion and seeks to record the truth of the era with his writing. Their neighbor, the widow Zhou Wan (played by Gao Ye), lives a quiet yet resilient life with her young daughter.

As the war draws nearer, the atmosphere in Nanjing grows increasingly tense. Lu Ziming continually brings bad news from the front lines, while Chen Mo tries to use the confined space of his studio to take final group photos for neighbors about to be separated, preserving the calm before the storm. After the Japanese army captures Nanjing, the entire city descends into hell. The photo studio, once a space for capturing beauty, is forced to become a hiding place and a silent witness to countless tragedies.

Survivors like Chen Mo, Lu Ziming, and Zhou Wan find themselves trapped inside. Amid endless fear and despair, Chen Mo makes a dangerous decision: to secretly use his camera to document the atrocities committed by the Japanese army and the suffering of his compatriots. Lu Ziming strives to smuggle these "pieces of evidence" out. Zhou Wan protects the child and this makeshift "family" with maternal resilience. The film avoids gratuitous depictions of gore, instead building immense emotional tension through the characters' strained expressions, suppressed dialogue, and those "unseen negatives" that are never developed. Ultimately, these photographic negatives, guarded at the cost of lives, become a silent yet powerful indictment of historical truth, bearing witness to ordinary people's tenacious hold on goodness and justice in the darkest of times.

Cultural Impact

Following its release, Nanjing Photo Studio sparked widespread social discussion and cultural reflection. Its impact is mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Firstly, the film offers a new narrative perspective for historical题材创作. Instead of focusing on grand battlefields or famous historical figures, it presents the historical catastrophe in a concrete and intimate way through the fate of a single photo studio and a few ordinary citizens. This approach of "small entry point, deep excavation" makes the historical memory more immersive and emotionally impactful, allowing the audience to deeply appreciate how war tramples every ordinary life.

Secondly, the film emphasizes the importance of "memory" and "witnessing." The camera in the film is not merely a prop but a core metaphor. It symbolizes the will to resist forgetting and safeguard the truth. In the present day, the film offers profound artistic insight into how to remember history and transmit authentic memory, resonating with the eternal theme of "remembering history and cherishing peace."

Finally, the film received acclaim from both critics and audiences. The high Douban rating of 8.8 reflects its excellent artistic quality and profound thematic depth. It solidified director Shen Ao's status as a formidable new-generation director in Chinese cinema, while also showcasing the breakthrough,精湛演技 of actors like Liu Haoran, Wang Chuanjun, and Gao Ye. The film also achieved recognition at domestic and international film festivals, further promoting the exchange and influence of Chinese war dramas on the global stage.
