Synopsis

"Mr. Six" is a 2015 film directed by Guan Hu, which tells the story of Beijing's old-timer Zhang Xuejun confronting emerging forces to save his son, showcasing the clash between traditional underworld codes and modern societal rules, with a Douban rating of 8.0.

Overview

"Mr. Six" is a Beijing-flavored film directed by Guan Hu, released in mainland China on December 24, 2015. Set in Beijing, the film tells the story of Zhang Xuejun, a former "laopaoer" who once roamed the Jianghu (the underworld), and his conflict with a group of privileged young men in order to save his son.

"Laopaoer" is a Beijing dialect term referring to those old Beijingers who have spent their lives in the hutongs, value loyalty, and abide by their own code of conduct. Through the character of Zhang Xuejun, the film depicts the clash between the traditional rules of the Jianghu and modern commercial society, as well as the older generation's adherence to integrity and brotherhood.

Plot Summary

Zhang Xuejun (played by Feng Xiaogang) is a former "laopaoer" who once roamed the Jianghu in Beijing's hutongs, known as "Sixth Master." Now in his sixties, he lives a quiet life running a car repair shop with his old partner Deng Zhaor (played by Liu Hua).

One day, Zhang Xuejun suddenly learns that his son, Xiaobo (played by Li Yifeng), has been taken captive. It turns out that Xiaobo had a conflict with the girlfriend of a privileged young man named Xiao Fei (played by Kris Wu). Xiao Fei's men took Xiaobo away, and he now owes 100,000 yuan in compensation.

Following the old Beijing way, Zhang Xuejun tries to resolve the issue through negotiation. He finds Xiao Fei, only to discover that Xiao Fei is not the spoiled rich kid he imagined. Despite his rebellious appearance, Xiao Fei harbors his own inner confusion and迷茫.

However, the situation quickly escalates. Behind Xiao Fei is a powerful interest group that not only refuses to release Xiaobo but also threatens to eliminate Zhang Xuejun. Faced with pressure from the powerful, Zhang Xuejun does not back down. Adhering to the old Beijing way, he calls his former brothers, preparing to settle this Jianghu grudge in the traditional manner.

In the end, Zhang Xuejun rides alone on his old bicycle, carrying the military knife he used in his youth, heading towards the final confrontation.

Thematic Analysis

"Mr. Six" is not just an action film; it is also a nostalgic look back at traditional values. Through the character of Zhang Xuejun, the film explores multiple themes:

  1. Rules and Contracts: Laopaoer emphasize "keeping one's word" and "a promise is worth a thousand pieces of gold," which aligns with the credit systems of modern society.
  2. Brotherhood and Loyalty: Zhang Xuejun's relentless efforts to save his son embody the familial bonds and sense of responsibility valued in traditional Chinese society.
  3. Intergenerational Conflict: The Jianghu rules of the older generation stand in stark contrast to the money-first mentality of the new generation.
  4. Urban Transformation: Beijing's hutongs are gradually disappearing, and the old Beijing way of life is slowly fading away in the process of modernization.

The film's ending, where Zhang Xuejun faces the powerful alone, symbolizes an indomitable spirit—the determination to uphold one's principles even against the strongest opponents.

Social Reception

"Mr. Six" received widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics upon its release. Feng Xiaogang was nominated for the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor for his role in the film and ultimately won.

The Beijing hutong culture, old Beijing dialect, and traditional Jianghu rules depicted in the film became hot topics of discussion among viewers. The term "laopaoer" also gained wider recognition, becoming a popular internet buzzword in 2015.
