Overview

"Return to Dust" is a 2022 Chinese drama film written and directed by Li Ruijun. The film tells the story of two lonely individuals, Ma Youtie and Cao Guiying, who are abandoned by their respective families in rural Gansu. After an arranged marriage, they meet and stay together, building warmth and dignity amidst a life of hardship. With an extreme realist style, the film focuses on the relationship between the land, labor, and people in rural Northwest China, showcasing the simple yet resilient vitality of farmers at the bottom of society. After its release, the film received widespread critical acclaim, with a Douban rating as high as 8.4. It has been hailed as a "deeply affectionate poem dedicated to the land and laborers."

Plot

The story takes place in a rural village in Northwest China. Ma Youtie (played by Wu Renlin) is an older, silent bachelor who has lived with his third brother's family for years, being used like a donkey. Cao Guiying (played by Hai Qing) is disabled, suffers from incontinence, is infertile, and endures cold treatment in her brother and sister-in-law's home. These two individuals, seen as "burdens" by their families, are hastily married through family arrangements. Initially, there is only strangeness and silence between them.

However, through day after day of working together, feelings quietly grow. They farm, harvest, and build their own adobe house together; they rescue adobe bricks on a rainy night and imprint flower marks on each other's wrists with wheat grains. Ma Youtie protects Guiying with his kindness, while Guiying illuminates Youtie's bleak life with her dependence and care. Although their life is hard, love blossoms from the soil. Yet, fate does not grant them lasting tenderness. A sudden accident forces the couple, who had just begun to see hope in life, to face a great upheaval once again. At the end of the film, Ma Youtie releases the donkey that has followed him all his life and, after eating an egg, faces everything calmly. The faded wedding photo on the wall quietly speaks of their former existence.

Cultural Impact

The impact of "Return to Dust" extended far beyond the realm of cinema, becoming a unique cultural phenomenon in 2022.

1. Recognition of Artistic Value: The film was selected for the main competition of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, a significant breakthrough for Chinese-language cinema in recent years. Its highly realistic visual style, profound gaze upon the land, and respectful portrayal of marginalized groups earned high praise from the international film community and domestic critics. It is considered another powerful work of Chinese realist cinema.

2. Sparking Social Discourse: The film profoundly presents the living conditions and inner worlds of rural left-behinds and laborers at the bottom of society, sparking public discussion on broad social issues such as rural revitalization, rural ethics, and individual dignity. The portrayal of Ma Youtie and Cao Guiying's "despised lives" touched audiences, fostering empathy and concern for marginalized groups.

3. The "Miracle" of Box Office and Dissemination: Initially, the film had poor screenings and box office performance. However, relying on its strong word-of-mouth, after being released on mainstream video platforms and through secondary dissemination and interpretation on short-video platforms, it achieved a remarkable "comeback." Its box office soared from a few million to over one hundred million yuan, creating a rare "long-tail effect" in Chinese film history. This phenomenon also reflects the audience's strong demand for high-quality, profound artistic works.

4. Inspiration for Filmmaking: The film's success proves that sincerely telling local stories rooted in specific lands and people possesses powerful vitality. It also provides valuable experience in the use of non-professional actors and the integration of film with rural culture.
