Overview

Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, located in the central mountainous region of Hainan Province, China, is one of the first five national parks established in China and a key area for biodiversity conservation both nationally and globally. It is not a single traditional scenic area but a vast, integrated ecosystem encompassing several former nature reserves and forest parks, including Wuzhi Mountain, Yingge Ridge, Jianfeng Ridge, Bawangling, and Diaoluo Mountain. Covering a total area of 4,269 square kilometers—approximately one-seventh of Hainan Island's land area—the park preserves China's most intact and diverse continental island-type tropical rainforest. It is the sole habitat of the Hainan Gibbon, the world's rarest primate, and the source of Hainan Island's three major rivers (Nandu River, Changhua River, and Wanquan River). It is hailed as "Hainan's Water Tower," a "Species Gene Bank," and an "Ecological Security Barrier." Visiting here is not just about admiring magnificent landscapes; it's an ecological experience delving into the mysteries of the rainforest and feeling the vitality of nature.

History

The conservation history of the Hainan tropical rainforest region is long-standing. As early as 1958, the Bawangling Forestry Bureau was established, marking the beginning of early forest management and protection. After Hainan became a province in 1988, ecological protection efforts significantly intensified. Several national or provincial-level nature reserves and forest parks were successively established, including Bawangling, Jianfeng Ridge, Wuzhi Mountain, Yingge Ridge, and Diaoluo Mountain. These scattered protected areas provided initial refuge for the tropical rainforest ecosystem and rare species, most notably the Hainan Gibbon.

Entering the 21st century, calls grew louder for a unified management system to address ecosystem fragmentation and enhance overall conservation effectiveness. Following extensive scientific research and planning, the State Council officially approved the establishment of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park in September 2021. It was listed among China's first batch of national parks in October of the same year at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15). This marked the beginning of a new, more systematic, and stricter phase of protection for Hainan's tropical rainforests. The core goals are to preserve the authenticity and integrity of the natural ecosystem while providing opportunities for the public to connect with nature and receive ecological education.

Main Attractions

The national park is vast. Currently, limited ecotourism and science education services are primarily offered to the public through the former nature reserves and forest parks within its boundaries. The main visiting areas include:

  1. Wuzhi Mountain Area: Centered around Wuzhi Mountain (1,867 meters), the highest peak on Hainan Island. This area features layered mountains often shrouded in clouds and mist, making it an excellent spot for hiking, adventure, and observing the vertical zonation of tropical montane rainforests. Hiking trails allow visitors to experience vegetation changes from lowland rainforest to mossy dwarf forest at the summit.
  2. Bawangling Area: This is the location of the "Bawangling Branch of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park" and the main monitoring and protection base for the Hainan Gibbon. Visitors can hike on特许的生态游径 (特许的生态游径) (such as the "Love Trail" or "Dominance Trail"), potentially hearing gibbon calls in the wild, and visit科普宣教设施 (science education facilities) to learn in-depth about the conservation story of this flagship species.
  3. Jianfeng Ridge Area: Home to one of China's largest and best-preserved tracts of pristine tropical rainforest. Its main peak stands at 1,412 meters and is known as the "Fairy Mountain of the South China Sea." The Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) scenic area offers beautiful landscapes, and the Rainforest Valley boardwalk allows close observation of typical rainforest phenomena like buttress roots, strangler figs, and aerial gardens.
  4. Diaoluo Mountain Area: Famous for its abundant waterfalls and stream landscapes, such as the Fengguoshan Waterfall Group. The dense rainforest vegetation and extremely high concentration of negative oxygen ions make it an ideal destination for relaxation, vacationing, and wellness.
  5. Yingge Ridge Area: As the ecological core of Hainan Island, its main area is primarily dedicated to strict scientific research and conservation, with limited tourism access. However, some ecotourism projects exist in surrounding communities, focusing more on deep ecological experiences and nature education.

Practical Information

Please note that Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park implements zoning control. Most areas are designated as core protection zones or ecological restoration zones and are not open to the public. Tourism activities are mainly concentrated in designated traditional use zones and surrounding recreation areas (corresponding to the former scenic spots mentioned above). Always confirm the specific opening status of your target area before traveling.

Item Specific Information (Using Major Open Scenic Areas as Examples)
Ticket Prices Each area sells tickets independently at varying prices. For example: Wuzhi Mountain Scenic Area ticket ~50 RMB; Jianfeng Ridge National Forest Park ticket ~60 RMB; Bawangling National Forest Park Love Trail/Dominance Trail ticket ~40-50 RMB. Prices are subject to change; please refer to the scenic area's announcement on the day.
Opening Hours Generally daily 08:00 - 17:00 (may vary slightly at different area entrances; some hiking routes may close earlier).
Suggested Visit Duration 1-2 days (in-depth exploration of each independent area requires at least half a day to a full day).
Transportation 1. Self-drive: The most convenient option. From Haikou or Sanya, take the Hainan Ring Expressway and Central Expressway, then switch to provincial/county roads to reach the visitor centers of each area.
2. Long-distance Bus + Local Transport: Take a bus from Haikou Main Bus Station or Sanya Bus Station to cities/counties like Wuzhishan, Ledong (for Jianfeng Ridge), or Changjiang (for Bawangling), then transfer to local taxis or tourist shuttle buses (limited schedules) to reach the scenic areas.
Best Travel Season November to April each year, when the climate is cool and dry, ideal for hiking. During the rainy season (May-October), the rainforest is lusher, but frequent rainfall requires extra caution.
Essential Items Non-slip hiking boots, long sleeves and pants (for mosquito/insect protection and against plant scratches), rain gear, mosquito repellent, sun protection, sufficient water and snacks.
Important Notes 1. Strictly adhere to park regulations; do not enter closed areas.
2. Protect the ecological environment: do not litter, pick plants, or disturb wildlife.
3. Spotting Hainan Gibbons requires exceptional luck and is strictly regulated; do not attempt to find or disturb them independently.
4. Mobile phone signals are weak in some areas; it's advisable to travel with companions and inform others of your itinerary in advance.
