Overview
Huangguoshu Waterfall, located in Zhenning Buyi and Miao Autonomous County, Anshun City, Guizhou Province, China, is the largest waterfall in Asia and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world. As a National Scenic Area and a National 5A Tourist Attraction, it is renowned worldwide for its majestic momentum, immense water flow, and unique karst landscape. The waterfall has a height of 77.8 meters, with the main drop being 67 meters; its width is 101 meters, with the main crest width being 83.3 meters. Its core scenic area covers 8.5 square kilometers and belongs to the typical karst erosion nick-point type waterfall. Huangguoshu Waterfall is not only a natural wonder but also carries rich ethnic culture, as the surrounding area is inhabited by the Buyi and Miao ethnic groups, offering a strong cultural atmosphere.
History
The discovery and documentation of Huangguoshu Waterfall have a long history. As early as the Ming Dynasty, the traveler Xu Xiake gave a vivid description in his The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake: Guizhou Travel Diary: "Looking south through the crevice in the ridge, I saw a stream on the left of the path cascading down, myriad ribbons flying in the air. The rocks over the stream resembled lotus leaves covering it from above, with three openings carved in the middle. The water flowed over the top of the leaves and down, like ten thousand bolts of sheer silk, hanging horizontally outside the openings, the vertical drop immeasurable in feet..." This is one of the earliest and most detailed written records of Huangguoshu Waterfall, and the name "Huangguoshu" gradually spread from this. The area where the waterfall is located has been a vital transportation route in southwest China since ancient times, witnessing the blending and development of multi-ethnic cultures. In 1982, Huangguoshu Waterfall was designated by the State Council as one of the first batch of National Scenic Areas, marking a new stage in its protection and development.
Main Attractions
The Huangguoshu Waterfall Scenic Area is not a single waterfall but a vast waterfall group system, mainly including the following core attractions:
- Huangguoshu Grand Waterfall: The soul of the scenic area. Visitors can view it from multiple angles. The most thrilling experience is traversing the 134-meter-long natural cave behind the waterfall—the "Water Curtain Cave." Inside, visitors can touch the flying waterfall up close through six cave windows, experiencing the wonder described as "Beaded curtains cannot be rolled up, a bolt of white silk hangs from a distant peak."
- Doupotang Waterfall: Located 1 kilometer upstream from Huangguoshu Waterfall, it is the widest in the waterfall group, with a crest width of 105 meters. The water flows over a tufa terrace, creating a mighty roar, hence its nickname "Roaring Waterfall." This was also a filming location for the ending theme of the 1986 TV series Journey to the West.
- Tianxingqiao Scenic Area: Located downstream of the Grand Waterfall, it is the essence of karst landform display. The area is divided into three sections: Tianxing Basin, Tianxing Cave, and Water-Shilin (Stone Forest on Water), famous for the perfect combination of rocks, water, forests, and caves. Among them, the "Yinlian Zhuitan Waterfall" (Silver Chain Falling into the Pool) is beautifully shaped, with water falling into a deep pool like silver chains, creating a unique sight. Attractions like "Numbered Life Stepping Stones" and "Beauty Banyan" within the area are also quite interesting.
