Synopsis

The Yangtze Three Gorges—Qutang, Wu, and Xiling—form a spectacular 193km canyon stretching from Chongqing to Yichang. A major cultural corridor and engineering marvel of China.

Overview

The Yangtze Three Gorges, comprising Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge, is one of the world's most spectacular canyon landscapes. Stretching approximately 193 kilometers from Baidi City in Chongqing to Nanjinguan Pass in Yichang, Hubei, the Three Gorges have captivated travelers, poets, and artists for millennia. The towering cliffs on both sides of the canyon frame the mighty Yangtze River as it rushes through these narrow passages, creating a breathtaking natural masterpiece.

The Three Gorges

Qutang Gorge

At just 8 kilometers in length, Qutang is the shortest but most majestic of the three gorges, renowned for its "grandeur." Two towering peaks—Chijia and Baiyan—stand guard across the river at the gorge entrance, earning it the title "Qutang is the most majestic under heaven." The ancient Baidi City, famous as the place where Liu Bei entrusted his son to Zhuge Liang, remains a cultural highlight of this section.

Wu Gorge

Wu Gorge spans approximately 46 kilometers and is celebrated for its "elegance." The twelve peaks of Wushan Mountain create a mystical backdrop, with the legendary Goddess Peak appearing and disappearing through morning mists. This ethereal beauty inspired Song Yu's "Ode to the Goddess" during the Warring States period. The gorge's charm lies not only in its landscape but in the dreamlike atmosphere created by layered peaks shrouded in clouds.

Xiling Gorge

The longest at 70 kilometers, Xiling Gorge is known for its "danger." With numerous shoals, rapid currents, and hidden reefs, it was historically the most treacherous section of the Yangtze navigation. Notable sights include the Bing Shu Bao Jian Gorge (Sword and Book Gorge) and the Niu Gan Ma Fei Gorge (Ox Liver and Horse Lung Gorge). The gorge region also preserves rich Ba and Chu cultural relics dating back to ancient times.

The Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam, constructed between 1994 and 2009, is the world's largest water conservancy project. Located at San doutan in Yichang, the dam stands 185 meters high, creating a reservoir covering 1,084 square kilometers. The project has dramatically improved flood control downstream—raising the flood protection standard of the Jingjiang Dyke from once-in-ten-years to once-in-a-hundred-years. The dam's ship locks allow 10,000-ton vessel fleets to travel directly from Chongqing to Shanghai.

History and Culture

The Three Gorges region is one of China's ancient cradles of civilization. The Wushan Man site, dating back approximately 2 million years, indicates early human activity here. The Ba people created a unique culture in these mountains and rivers, with hanging coffin burials, cliffside pathways, and ancient towns still visible today. Historical figures including Qu Yuan, Wang Zhaojun, Li Bai, Du Fu, and Su Shi all left immortal poetry inspired by these gorges. The unique landscape gave rise to the "Zhu Zhi Ci" folk song form.

Cultural Significance
