The University of Southern Indiana's online MSE with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction has specific requirements that applicants must meet to enroll. Please read the admission guidelines to ensure you qualify.
Out-of-State Students:
Are you an out-of-state student interested in pursuing the Master of Science in Education, Graduate Certificate for Teacher License Addition in Exceptional Needs, or the Post-Master’s Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration degree at USI? Please visit our Professional Licensure page for information on whether the program meets the educational requirements for certification in your state.
The Education programs are limited to working with certain states in the U.S. only. Moving into a state may limit your opportunity for professional licensure.

Admission Requirements:
Applicants must be admitted to graduate study under University graduate policies and then be accepted into the specific MSE track. In addition to the requirements for admission to graduate study at USI, admission to the MSE program requires the following:
A baccalaureate degree (minimum cumulative GPA 2.75) from an accredited college or university with a degree in education or a related field
A minimum GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level at all schools attended
A copy of a standard U.S. teaching license (recommended for all programs and required for licensure related programs)

This course addresses the needs of those with diverse social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds. Course content emphasizes the necessary skills to collaborate communicate, and coordinate with families, paraprofessionals, and other educational professionals to provide effective educational support and services to students with and without exceptionalities. An emphasis will be placed on the neuroeducation perspectives and collaborative relationships with various stakeholders involved in a student’s education, such as families, community partners, and school-based partners.
EDUC 604: Equity in Education

The purpose of this course is to explore the concept of equity within the P-12 educational context by exploring the relationship between culture and cognition. The neuroeducation research framework presents the importance of culturally responsive teaching and its impact on the brain. Throughout this course, students will learn how cultural awareness and responsiveness inform educational practices which promote equitable educational opportunities for diverse student populations.

This course is designed to enhance pedagogical knowledge and content knowledge of number and operations for K-6 teachers and teacher leaders. Topics include the 8 Effective Teaching Practices, the 8 Mathematical Practices for K-6 students, pre-number concepts, structure of word problems, place value, strategies for solving multi-digit problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), properties of real numbers and the real number system.
