The people behind the mission
Our mission is to preserve the nationally significant historic pathway that carried coal and iron from Wilkes-Barre to Philadelphia. Together with the citizens of our communities, we have worked diligently to preserve and revitalize historic places and landmark towns along the Delaware and Lehigh canal, conserve green space for public use, document and interpret our heritage, celebrate our community and region, and create partnerships for long-term sustainability. That’s a tall order, but our team makes it possible.

He also has extensive experience in the quality control field.
Tim was born and raised in the Pittsburgh, Pa area. He earned his B.A. in History at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and is working on a Master’s in History at Lehigh University. Hank and George
The Twin Turbos
Hank and George
The Twin Turbos
At DLNHC, our longest-serving team members aren’t just dedicated—they have long ears and big hearts! George and Hank, our beloved mules, are celebrating their 19th season pulling the Josiah White II canal boat through Hugh Moore Park.
Affectionately known as
“the boys,”
they walk the same towpath once used by 19th-century canal mules, helping us bring history to life for visitors of all ages.
Though not brothers, they’re nearly twins in size and spirit—both standing 16 hands tall and weighing around 1,100 pounds. They were chosen in 2006 for their calm temperaments, strong build, and instant bond with our team (and each other!).
Today, George and Hank enjoy a much easier life than the mules of the canal era. They walk less than six miles a day, have two days off each week, and take a well-earned five-month winter vacation. Their care includes a healthy diet, regular veterinary checkups, dental care, and professional hoof maintenance—ensuring they stay happy, healthy, and ready to greet visitors all season long.
They’re more than mascots—they’re living links to our region’s past and the stars of every canal ride.
