“ഗ്രഹത്തിലിരുന്ന് അന്യാദൃശമായ സ്വയംഭരണശക്തി ലോകമൊട്ടുക്കു വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കേണ്ട സ്ത്രീകൾ ഗൃഹം വിട്ട് കെട്ടിഞെളിഞ്ഞു രാജ്യാകാര്യാദികൾ നടത്തുകയോ സഭകൂടി പ്രസംഗങ്ങൾ തട്ടിമൂളിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യണമെന്നില്ല” (ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികൾ 1906)
1.ആമുഖം: ഭാരതം ഒരു വിശ്വഗുരുവായി സംക്രമിക്കുകയാണ് (Hall 2019:81-104, Kapoor & Aavadhesh 2005 a&b)). വിശ്വഗുരുവായി സംക്രമിക്കുന്ന ഭാരതം ലോകത്തിനാകെ ഒരു ബോധനസ്റ്റേറ്റ് (pedagogic state) ആകേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയസ്റ്റേറ്റ് (political state) വ്യാപിക്കുന്നത് ഭൗതികമായി ആണ്. എന്നാൽ ബോധനസ്റ്റേറ്റ് വ്യാപിക്കുന്നത് രാഷ്ട്രീയ സ്വരൂപമായല്ല. മറിച്ച് ഒരു സോഫ്റ്റ് സ്റ്റേറ്റായാണ്. അതായത്, രാഷ്ട്രഭേദമന്യേ എല്ലാ സമൂഹങ്ങളിലെയും മനുഷ്യ൪ക്ക് എത്താനാവുന്ന ഉന്നതമായ ഒരു മാനവിക അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് സമസ്തത്തെയും നയിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ആത്മീയ നേതൃത്വത്തിലേക്കാണ് ഭാരതം വികസിക്കുന്നത് (Hall: 2019). “ലോകാസമസ്താ സുഖിനോ ഭവന്തു” എന്ന അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക്. ആ അവസ്ഥയിലേക്ക് ഭാരതത്തെതന്നെ ആദ്യം ആഭ്യന്തരമായി പരിവ൪ത്തിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട് പരിഷ്കരിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അത്തരത്തിലുള്ള പരിവ൪ത്തനത്തിനുള്ള ദ൪ശനങ്ങളുടെയും ചിന്തകളുടെയും ഉറവിടങ്ങൾ ഭാരതത്തിലെ പൗരാണികവേദോപനിഷത്തുകളും ശ്രുതികളും, സ്മൃതികളും ധ൪മ്മസൂത്രങ്ങളും മാത്രമല്ല. സംസ്ക്യതത്തിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളവയോടൊപ്പംതന്നെ അവയുടെ കലാകാലങ്ങളിലുള്ള വ്യാഖ്യാനങ്ങളെയും അവയുടെ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളലുകളെയും തള്ളിക്കളയലുകളും ഭാരതീയബോധനഉറവിടങ്ങളാണ് (pedagogic sources). ഒപ്പം, ഭാരതത്തിലെ പ്രാകൃതവും തമിഴും ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള എല്ലാഭാഷകളിലും എഴുതപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാ ആദ്ധ്യാത്മിക ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളും ബോധനഭാരതത്തിന്റെത വൈവിദ്ധ്യമാ൪ന്ന പാഠപുസ്തകങ്ങളാണ്, അഥവാ, വിശ്വഗുരുവായ ഭാരതത്തിന്റെെ സമഗ്രമായ ബോധന ഉറവിടങ്ങളാണ് ഇവയെല്ലാം. ഭാരതത്തിലെ എല്ലാ ഭാഷകളിലുമുള്ള ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ബോധന ഉറവിടങ്ങൾ അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നതിന്റെല ഭാഗമാണ് ഈ പഠനം. ചട്ടമ്പിസ്വാമികളുടെ (1853–1924) സ്ത്രീപുരുഷസംബന്ധിയായ “പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ സ്ത്രീപുരുഷൻമാ൪ക്കുള്ള സ്ഥാനം (1906)” എന്ന പ്രബന്ധം മലയാളത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു ബോധനഉറവിടമായി പരിഗണിക്കാമോ എന്നാണ് പരിശോധിക്കുന്നത്. പ്രബന്ധത്തിന്റെന ആദ്യഭാഗത്ത് സ്വാമികളുടെ ഈ പ്രബന്ധം എഴുതിയ സന്ദ൪ഭം വിവരിക്കുന്നു. രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഭാഗത്ത് പ്രബന്ധത്തിന്റെ ചുരുക്കം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. മൂന്നാമത്തെ ഭാഗത്ത് പ്രബന്ധം പരിശോധിച്ച് ചില നിഗമനങ്ങളിലേക്കെത്തുന്നു. ഈ നിഗമനങ്ങളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ഈ പ്രബന്ധം ഭാരതത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു ബോധനഉറവിടമായി പരിഗണിക്കുന്നതിന്റെം പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും ച൪ച്ച ചെയ്യുന്നു.

In this text I am going to argue that unless it opens itself to discussions that dominate contemporary social and human sciences, and unless protection of the specificity of historical research is undertaken, there is a real risk that history might be reduced to the status of an auxiliary science of other human and social sciences that have thus far been more successful in interpreting contemporary events and phenomena which have traditionally been consigned to the field of history. I claim that the weak points of contemporary historical studies are methodology and theory separated from empirical research in such a way that they are unable to capture complex phenomena which have emerged with the advent of modernity. In order to link practice and theory, I propose to appropriate for historical research what has been called "grounded theory" — theory developed out of data, and which uses comparative approaches and case studies as its main methods. The text contains two parts: in part one, I indicate ways in which theories in contemporary human and social science have failed to deal with historical change and in part two, I sketch a methodology of grounded theory. 本文提出以下論點:我們必須主導當代社會及人文學科的諸種討論保 持開放的心態,並重視歷史研究的特殊性,否則真正的危機會是歷史學的 地位很可能淪為其他人文與社會學科的輔助學科:迄今為止其他人文與社 會學科對於當代事件與現象的詮釋更為成功,儘管對於當代事件與現象的 詮釋在傳統上均交付給歷史領域。本文主張:當代史學研究的弱點在於史 學的方法論和理論與實證研究分離,以致於難以面對因現代性的來臨而出 現的複雜現象。為能連結理論與實踐,本文作者建議在歷史研究中挪用所 謂的「接地理論」──根據數據所發展出來的理論,並採用比較的途徑與 個案研究為其主要方法。本文包含兩部分:在第一部作者指出當代人文及 社會學科所提出的理論,何以未能支應歷史的變化;在第二部分作者草擬 了「接地理論」的方法論。

A periodical for a science: Xinli and psychological knowledge in Republican China 1922-1927, 2017
In the summer of 1921, a specialized periodical devoted to a new scientific discipline, modern psychology, was established synchronously with the founding of the Chinese Psychological Society in Nanjing. In the following six years, this serial scientific periodical, Xinli (心理), was engaged in promoting the professionalization of the psychologists' community in Republican China, and constructing the earliest communications of psychological knowledge with Chinese laymen readers. This thesis underscores the historical agency of Xinli in shaping the growing field of modern psychology and in interweaving psychological knowledge with Chinese society during the early years of Republican China.

The postmodern critique of modernity has focused on the construction of the modern subject and the self-disciplining and self-cancellation tendencies within it. This critique, however, fails to consider what happens during the early years of children’s development — the period during which the modern subject is made, and the one in which the paradoxes and ambiguities inherent in modern subjectivity are established. In this essay Guoping Zhao analyzes how children’s developmental process affects the definition and formation of the self in the United States. She uses a cross-cultural lens, comparing the dominant cultural ideas and practices associated with child development in the United States (stemming from the ideology of liberal individualism) with those influenced and supported by Confucianism. Zhao argues that children’s paths of development are not natural but cultural ones guided by underlying ideologies, and ultimately concludes that this cultural process determines the shapes and forms of the modern subject and the nature of individual freedom and autonomy.

Postcolonial Knowledge from Empires: The Beginnings of Menstrual Education in Taiwan, 1950s–1980s

On 12 September 1963 an article titled "Menstrual Education" appeared in the newspaper Zhengxin xinwen bao (徵信新聞報). 1 The article advocated teaching children developmental physiology as a "natural phenomenon." It praised the notion of ridding people of the confusion and ignorance supposedly rooted in their old ways: In the United States, menstruation education consists of showing Disney cartoon films. In a science museum in Chicago, every physiological phenomenon from fertilization to birth is exhibited in detail in the Miracle of Development Room using plastic and plaster models and charts. Adults who walk into the room are reportedly always shocked, while the millions of elementary school children who visit yearly are unperturbed, encountering it with ordinary curiosity. Indeed, their reactions indicate the benefits [of such education]. For example, 11-year-old Johnny was happy to now understand the principles of how he was born and impressed by the wonders of life. A fourteen-year-old girl named Meili was having her period, and she was so afflicted and lonely. After entering the room, everything became clear to her, and she was rid of confusion and bewilderment. She was very happy. Children are taking in [the display] as a kind of natural phenomenon, and they are learning from it with a humble heart. (Ishigaki Junji 1963) The article introduces this US method of countering nonscientific views by way of a Chinese translation of the writings of a Japanese public health educator, Ishigaki Junji (石垣純二, 1912-76). Featured alongside it was another essay, translated by Lin Xincheng (林信成) and also originally in Japanese, titled "Cuowu de jiankang guannian" 錯誤的健康觀念 (Mistaken Health Concepts).
