President’s Impact Report
2023 - 2024
Dear readers, esteemed colleagues, and friends of Carlow University,
I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you for showing up. I don’t just mean today, here, reading this. I mean thank you for showing up in the world, in your fields, and in our community.
It is because of the work we do as a collective that future generations will be able to thrive here in Western Pennsylvania.
Earlier this year I had the honor of seeing a glimpse of that future cross the stage at commencement - as I shook the hands of nearly 500 students setting off to make our community, our region, and our world a more just and merciful place. I saw hope in their eyes and inspiration in their walk. I could feel the difference - the difference between a college graduate and a Carlow graduate. It is that difference that I hope to share with you in this impact report.
It’s the difference between professionals concerned for themselves alone and those concerned for the common good. It’s the difference in employees trained only in technical skills, and in those also trained to be compassionate, responsible leaders - the kinds of leaders our region desperately needs as we move into the future.
You can see it on campus, in our programs and partnerships, and in our support for marginalized communities. You can see it in our dedication to discovery and expression, and in our unwavering commitment to making a real-life impact in our own region, and all over the world. Carlow isn’t just providing education; we’re providing pathways to a brighter future for all.

Meet Celti
Meet the newest Celtic on campus — Celti.
Our first-ever campus dog is a cute little 12-week-old golden doodle, who right now is just 9 pounds, but she could grow to be 90 pounds. Look for her on campus every day spreading joy and Celtic spirit.
If you spot her, be sure to get a selfie with Celti and post it with #Devoted, #Carlow, #Celti
Devoted to the Future of Healing
Our students are not simply trained to be the best in technical knowledge and competencies, but deeply skilled in communication, bedside manner, teamwork, empathy, compassion, social justice, and ethics... because those are the kinds of healers and healthcare leaders the world needs.

From there she raised funds across the University for the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology, Geriatrics, and many more departments and programs. Post-UPMC, she launched her own consulting business, Gayle Tissue Strategies, and worked primarily with nationally based organizations like the American Foundation for the Blind.

She also helped countless professionals and parents navigate the ecosystem. She managed communications and marketing, guided school board engagement, and handled government relations.
Her expertise in addressing youth violence led to notable international roles, including with the FBI’s Central American Community Impact Exchange (CACIE) program. Jones’ civic engagements reflect her commitment to social justice. She has held leadership positions in various organizations, including the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, where she made history as the first woman and first African American leader.
Jones is an Ed.M. candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
IDE2A
To foster a campus community of belonging, the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Ethics, and Accessibility (IDE2A) Strategy was successfully finalized and launched, introducing a comprehensive framework inclusive of a roadmap and dashboard designed to measure key performance outcomes. This framework, enthusiastically received during prelaunch sessions with faculty and staff, is a cornerstone in advancing our social justice agenda and aligns with the University’s mission to foster a more just, merciful, and equitable world community.
As part of the University’s social justice agenda, and in an ongoing effort to acknowledge and dismantle systemic racism, an Antiracism Strategy was designed and delivered, accompanied by an Executive Dashboard. This innovative framework included a strategic plan and key deliverables, marking a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to build a campus of belonging, where voices are both heard and respected.

Corporate and Foundation Workforce Event
On May 29 Carlow University sponsored its first evening with corporations and foundations focused on workforce development for our region.
That evening, Dr. Humprey discussed the need to forge a path forward together with committed regional corporate partners. She highlighted the idea that investing in Carlow University means investing in a future where education is the cornerstone of economic resilience and social prosperity, while strengthening our economy in Western Pennsylvania. She reminded everyone in the room that they have the power to make a significant impact and that by partnering with Carlow, they are not only shaping the future workforce but also enhancing the quality of life for all in our region.

Devoted to Positively Changing Lives
Philanthropy touches the lives of every student and their family, every faculty member and every employee at Carlow University. Philanthropy fuels every stop along the way that a student makes and every profound idea that a faculty member may have.
Gifts to Carlow can have a remarkable impact, no matter the size. Every contribution has a role in shaping the educational experience. Scholarships, financial gaps, capital needs, national and international travel, special programming and every groundbreaking idea yet to be discovered are all influenced by philanthropy. Donors to Carlow have answered a thought that most frequently reverberates on our campus and shared by our President: Your potential to make a difference is immense. You have been given much, and the call to give back is both a privilege and a responsibility.”
Thank you to these donors, Carlow University celebrates the generosity of our alumni, friends, corporations, foundations and organizations. Our President, Dr. Kathy Humphrey, our Board of Trustees, administrative leadership, our faculty and each employee gratefully acknowledge gifts received during FY2023-24 and fully realize the impact these gifts have made on the entire world of Carlow.

Circle of Mercy
Philanthropy has a rhythm and harmony every day. Major gifts have a sizeable influence because they are the largest gifts an organization receives.
Our president, Dr. Kathy Humphrey, frequently urges those on campus to reach high and embrace the opportunity to foster an environment where education and community thrive together. We thank these special donors who have, indeed, reached high, many contributing on an annual basis. These gifts are the backbone of the philanthropy program.
Below Carlow recognizes these individuals, all within the President’s Circle. These are Circles that can expand and grow—and influence the student experience and the innovation and discovery throughout Carlow University.

Deeper Dive: Atkins Center for Ethics
Carlow University has revitalized the strategic design and approach of the Atkins Center, underscoring the university’s commitment to a just and merciful world. The Center is now focused on three critical areas: bioethics, artificial intelligence (AI) ethics, and business ethics. Kashmir Hill, the renowned New York Times tech reporter, headlined the 2024 Atkins Speaker Series on April 15, 2024. Her presentation examined the ethics of AI and machine learning as they relate to facial recognition. This initiative highlights our dedication to being at the forefront of ethical discussions in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The Atkins Center for Ethics hosted its annual student essay contest, posing the thought-provoking ethical question: Cyberbullying or Freedom of Speech? This contest challenged students to explore and articulate their perspectives on these significant and often conflicting issues, encouraging critical thinking and ethical analysis.
Through these initiatives and projects, Carlow University continues to reinforce its legacy as an institution known for ethical leadership and a steadfast commitment to social justice. We are dedicated to not only educating but also inspiring our students and community members to be agents of change, working toward a more equitable and just society.
