Through Our Eyes, In Our Hands: Prioritizing Indigenous Knowledge in Museums
will be on display at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design every Tuesday-Saturday until June 27. This exhibition foregrounds Native perspectives on the stewardship of cultural belongings and the history and future of repatriation. This exhibition transforms the museum into a site of learning, self-examination, and responsibility.
Visitors are guided through the intertwined histories of museum collecting, cultural consultation and the journey to repatriation. Archival materials, personal accounts and community-based narratives offer insight into the significance of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the ongoing work beyond its legal requirements. Rather than presenting repatriation as a transactional process, this exhibition emphasizes its cultural, spiritual, emotional and relational dimensions — its power to restore connections and honor ancestors and communities.
