This article presents the research on the efficiency of performance of automatic design of varian... more This article presents the research on the efficiency of performance of automatic design of variant products system, including the process of product variant configuration, preparation of the 3D model in CAD system and the preparation of the assembly instructions for the manufacturing positions. The variants of the described product take the form of various combinations of individual assembly parts combined together and constitute an example of customized products, and the process of their manufacture (assembly) is the subject of the research carried out in the SmartFactory Laboratory at the Poznan University of Technology.

The main aim of the paper is present how to prepare the CAD model in the context of further CAM p... more The main aim of the paper is present how to prepare the CAD model in the context of further CAM process preparation, with the assumption of automation of technical preparation of a production process. Above this, the paper presents also the concept of building a KBE system for the automated technology design process, which ensures integration into automatically way two separate tasks: CAD tooling model preparation and CAM milling program. Presented in the paper example concerns the design process of die tooling, using for holding corrugated pipes in connectors install process. The concept of preparation of the KBE system assumed processing of engineering knowledge at three stages: acquisition, formalization, and applying. Development of such solutions can be a method for implementation of mass customization strategy in the technical office.

Although programming CNC machines with CAM systems make it possible, it is necessary to effectively acquire knowledge about the programming process and technological requirements for effective automation. The paper presents a method for decomposition of knowledge about the CNC machine programming process based on acquiring knowledge from various sources, both from technologists as well as on the basis of analysis of archival CNC control programs. To decompose the programming process, it is proposed to apply the knowledge model described by various attributes. Verification of the method is shown in the process of knowledge decomposition for manufacturing special production tooling.

This paper presents practical results of a new, open approach to knowledge formalization and mana... more This paper presents practical results of a new, open approach to knowledge formalization and management in Virtual Reality applications for use in industry, especially in design and training purposes. Idea of applications with open access to knowledge is presented. Three cases of VR systems are shown – two for the design and one for training, all implemented in industrial companies in Poland. The focus is put on concepts of storing and easy editing knowledge in the applications, in a way to ensure self-sufficiency of applications in a given company after deployment. Dedicated tools for knowledge edition are presented, along with selected results of their implementation in scope of effectiveness of expanding the knowledge base.

The paper presents possibility of using low-cost FDM process, realized by MakerBot Replicator 2X machine, in comparison with a professional one to build tooling for a simulation of ultrasound examination procedure. The objects were manufactured on two different machines out of ABS material, 3D scanned for accuracy testing and finally possibilities of their use in a VR system were evaluated.

Knowledge based engineering tools are presented as a base for building systems for automation of design and manufacturing preparation. Methodologies of building KBE systems are presented and described, authors’ own methodology is presented along with selected cases of its use. It is proven that reduction of time needed for design and manufacturing preparation can be vast, justifying use of KBE systems as a way of manufacturing optimization of configurable products.

The idea of the system is based on a web-based architecture, assuming that configuration of the product variant is performed by its customer, through a special user interface. Configuration data are transformed in a CAD software automatically, which allows to prepare the technical documentation without participation of qualified engineers. The methodology is presented as a procedure which includes five main stages of KBE system build: identification, acquisition of knowledge, system design, building system components and implementation. The paper presents practical validation of the methodology on the example of plumbing fittings design process.

The paper describes an integrated process of design of configurable products, on example of a cit... more The paper describes an integrated process of design of configurable products, on example of a city bus, comprising of two stages: configuration of a product variant with client participation and preparation of appropriate technical documentation in the design division of a company. The configuration stage is realized in a special, VR-class system—Virtual Design Studio (VDS). The technical documentation preparation stage is automated, by use of intelligent, generative CAD models, developed in the Autodesk Inventor software. They allow to save time of engineering design. The paper presents operation of the VDS system, process of building generative CAD models and integration of both stages.

The paper presents the methodology and implementation of original Automatic CAM programming using... more The paper presents the methodology and implementation of original Automatic CAM programming using machining templates (ACPUT) dedicated to manufacturing special technological tooling. The development of ACPUT was inspired by the observation that although modern computer-aided design (CAD) / computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems can automatically create CAM programs, their universality makes them both difficult to use and inefficient because the programs created this way often contain errors. The presented programming procedure includes the development of specific machining templates based on technological knowledge gathered in a specially prepared database. These templates are dedicated to a group of parts characterized by the similarity of their geometric features. ACPUT makes it possible to reduce(in comparison to traditional CAM programming) the time required to develop a machining program, thereby positively impacting the total cost of tooling production. Production processes must be constantly adapted, to meet changing customers’ requirements. This enforces flexibility on production companies. High quality products, delivered on time, sold with an acceptable price––this is already a standard. The main concepts described in the paper revolve around involving customers into design process by use of various systems based on knowledge. This can lead to competitive advantage and a number of other benefits shown in the paper. Products customization is still a big challenge for production companies, because it demands appropriate planning and production control, which is also presented.

The article presents the results of research on the impact of virtual reality on the effectivenes... more The article presents the results of research on the impact of virtual reality on the effectiveness of training employees performing production tasks. The research was carried out in the Smart Factory laboratory, which is a model of a smart factory functioning in accordance with the concept of Industry 4.0. A prototype VR system and its building process were presented, starting with the digitization of the laboratory, through logical programming and connecting peripheral devices. The subject, scope and plan of conducting comparative studies of operator training at both real production stations and in a virtual environment were presented. As a criterion for comparing the results achieved by individual groups subject to the study, the following were adopted: the time to complete the production task and the number of non-compliant products achieved in real conditions.
