In this paper we discuss the observable interactions between Italy and the eastern Mediterranean regions from the late 14 th to the 11 th century BCE. During that time, specific bronze types such as Naue II swords, spearheads, various implements and dress accessories belonging to the metallurgical koine found their way into the Mediter-ranean world. These phenomena are often discussed in connection with the activities of the so called 'Sea Peoples'. In order to provide analytical results for the discussion of this topic we carried out XRF and lead isotope analyses on artefacts found in different Aegean and Italian regions. Based on their analytical results a number of bronzes can be related to the Northern Italian ore deposits in the Trentino, which enables us to identify them as imports to the Aegean.

more
A rim fragment of a handmade vessel with intaglio decoration is part of the ceramic finds from tomb complex 4+5 at Kition on the south coast of Cyprus. It can be identified as a cup/bowl of the Apennine culture group, which makes it the only Apennine vessel known from the Eastern Mediterranean so far. The distribution of the parallels for the combination of vessel shape and motif in Italy demonstrates that the main production area of such vessels was Campania. The date of the parallels in the Italian Middle Bronze Age 3 fits with the date of the earliest of the pottery grave goods in tomb complex 4+5, as most of those were produced in LH IIIA2. Presumably during this time, the Apennine vessel came from southern Italy – most probably from Campania or the Taranto region, where Mycenaean pottery of the same age has also been found – to Cyprus.

more
The different destructions of the Mycenaean palaces on the Greek mainland and on Crete unfold their historical relevance on two different levels. Firstly, and in a very concrete way, they signify the sharpening crisis and subsequently the final and definite demise of the Asiatic Mode of Production (or else the Palace State) in southeastern Europe. Second, these palace destructions happened during a period, in which various circum-Mediterranean societies were undergoing profound social and economic changes. Similarly to Greece, those changes were marked by violent destructions of political and economic centers in a number of different regions. Since the developments of the societies living along the central and the eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea were interconnected in stronger or weaker relationships of uneven and combined character, especially so during the 14 th and 13 th centuries BCE, the question arises whether it is possible to uncover causal connections between events separated by many hundreds of kilometers. In order to fully perceive and explain the historical importance of the Mycenaean palace destructions, it is therefore necessary to widen the geographical perspective. As the precondition of any interregional historical analysis is the precise localization of specific events in time, this paper explores the timeline of major eastern Mediterranean destruction events with reference to the palace destructions in Greece as well as in terms of absolute chronology (mainly in relation to Egyptian and Near Eastern rulers' reigns). A comparison of stratified pottery assemblages forms the basis for this endeavor.

This article reports the results o an archaeometric study using NAA on 20 samples o wheelmade fine-ware pottery and one pithos from Roca Vecchia in Apulia. The study aims at elucidating the circulation of Mycenaean-type and Italo-Mycenaean-type vessels across southern Italy. For comparison with Punta di Zambrone, we have focused on ceramics from the RBA levels of Roca Vecchia, as this is a coastal settlement, which, according to previous studies, yielded both Aegean imports and local or regional Italo-Mycenaean products, all well-stratified in a continuous ertical settlement se uence. The chemical analysis identified a ew imports rom Greece (mainly rom Achaea Elis) and many Apulian products (forming two chemical groups), some of which adhere closely to the Mycenaean style, while others are of Italo-Mycenaean type. These Apulian chemical groups are absent from the previously analysed pots from Punta di Zambrone. One medium coarse pithos from Roca Vecchia turned out to be an import from the southern plain of Sybaris, i.e. the same region that is represented with a ew Mycenaean fine-ware essels at Punta di ambrone.

We analysed 37 samples of pottery and daub fragments from Punta di Zambrone (province of Vibo Valentia) by combining thin-section petrography and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) geochemistry. The aim is to identify possible production areas for some wheelmade vessels of Aegean type and better define raw materials and paste recipes for the local handmade impasto ware. By integrating petrographic and NAA results, one reliable group emerged, which refers to the local specialised production of Recent Bronze Age (RBA) open shapes. A filter test allowing larger elemental variances was applied on NAA data in order to identify further groups (named special groups) to be specifically compared with petrographic fabrics. The special NAA group Ul41 and petro group 3, including local reference materials such as daub fragments, correlate well. Furthermore, the concentration pattern of Ul41 is close to that of local clay deposits (Cava Monaca and Fiumara Jona). The RBA closed shapes show a lower correspondence between geochemical and petrographic results, presumably attributable to less standardised production processes.

The present paper deals with the wheel-based manufacturing technology employed for the production of pottery in central Laconia and the Argolid during the Mycenaean palatial period (roughly 1450-1200 BCE). The main set of data comes from the combined macroscopic and X-Ray analyses on pottery discovered at the palace of Ayios Vasileios in Laconia. Additional material of Argive/NE Peloponnesian provenance was examined as well for comparative reasons. The latter comes from Tiryns and Tall Zirā'a, Jordan. Although growing evidence suggests that wheel-forming techniques can be more variable than one would have traditionally thought, very few studies have examined the use of the potter's wheel during the Mycenaean period and the underlying craft behaviours. Our study suggests that the knowledge of this tool in the Argolid and central Laconia was not associated with the wheel-throwing technique but the so-called wheel-coiling, and was based on similar levels of expertise. However, we can also observe variations between these two regions, especially in the ways of mastering the rotary device within the forming process. The manufacture of the wheelmade pottery in Mycenaean Greece implies thus a complex technological phenomenon that involved different potting communities participating in the social and economic organization of palatial pottery production.

X-Ray analysis confirmed that wheel-coiling was the primary technique at Ayios Vasileios; no wheel-throwing evidence was found.
