Fellow takes part in groundbreaking larynx transplant surgery at Mayo Clinic
July 16, 2024
A multidisciplinary team in Arizona performed the third known total larynx transplant in the U.S. The case also marks a medical milestone as the first known total larynx transplant performed as part of a clinical trial and on a patient with active cancer. Payam Entezami, M.D., M.S., head and neck microvascular and reconstructive surgery fellow, was fortunate to play a role.

Neurologic surgery resident shares his challenges pursing medicine as a dreamer

Seung Lee, M.D., was in high school when he learned that he was an undocumented citizen. When it seemed like he wouldn't be able to realize his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon because of his undocumented status, the government's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program opened a door for him. Today, Dr. Lee is a resident in Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida, and a recipient of the American Epilepsy Society's 2021 Young Investigator Award.

Former firefighter turned medical student keeps focus on family, career
August 9, 2021
The term "fourth-year medical student" feels like a misnomer for Nicolas Rubel, who finished his final year at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Florida. The reason? The former firefighter and paramedic has two other roles that he says are even more important than medicine. Nick is a husband and father of two. He recognizes that he's considered a nontraditional student, and the 36-year-old has ambitious goals for his career, but it can't come at the expense of his family.
