The event, which welcomed expecting mothers and families with babies born between April 2025 and April 2026, was a resounding success, bringing together resources, education, and support for the community’s youngest members. “This event brought me back to my own experiences as a parent,” said Sonja Morgan, Student Recruiter at Diné College in Shiprock. “It reminded me of the challenges and joys of raising children and the importance of having a strong support system. I wanted to ensure these families had access to the resources and information I wish I had when I was a young parent.” The celebration featured a variety of activities and resources for families, including a special gift bag filled with diapers, baby essentials, and promotional items, distributed while supplies lasted. Attendees also had the opportunity to connect with local organizations and learn about educational opportunities for both parents and children. Morgan, who hosted a recruitment table at the event, emphasized the importance of education and community support. “I spoke with parents about the value of higher education and shared information about FERPA, college readiness, and the importance of reading and writing with their children,” she said. “It’s all about empowering families to dream big and take steps toward a brighter future.” The event also highlighted Diné College’s commitment to cultural preservation and education. “Many students are showing interest in Diné studies, cultural arts like silversmithing and weaving, and even our rodeo and sports programs,” Morgan noted. “It’s inspiring to see the next generation connecting with their heritage while pursuing their dreams.” In addition to the celebration, Morgan announced that recruitment efforts are in full swing, with campus tours now being scheduled at both the Shiprock and Tsaile campuses. “We’re planning an open house right after graduation to showcase our programs and bring the community together,” she shared. “It’s an exciting time to be part of Diné College.” Morgan expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their support. “I want to thank Thomas Bennett and Malcolm Bob for allowing me to be creative in my recruitment efforts,” she said. “Their encouragement makes events like this possible.” The Nihi’awéé’ Baa Nihił Dahózhó dóó Baa Ahéé Daniidzín event was sponsored by Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren, First Lady, Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice-President, and served as a reflection of the Shiprock community’s dedication to nurturing strong, healthy families.
