, and within workspaces, into
channels

Slack Usage Hints
Check the channel description and other details (such as pinned files and discussions) at the top before posting in a channel.
When talking directly to other users in public channels, prefacing their user name with @ will cause them to be notified of your message. Also, Slack will help you complete their user name with pop-up suggestions.
Be considerate when direct messaging other users, ideally checking in a public channel if it's OK to do so before messaging privately. Unsolicited direct messages or spam are typically unwelcome. Promoting your business, asking for a job, recruiting for an activity... unless you've been invited to do so by the individual it is not appropriate to send cold-DMs about these (or most other) topics.
Using
Slack's threading functionality
(look for the reply icon on your first comment) is encouraged as it better allows multiple concurrent discussions in the same channel.
You can set your status on the whole workspace by using the
/status
command. It can be an emoji or custom text. For example:
/status :)
. At midnight, it’ll be cleared automatically. You can also type
/status clear
to do this earlier.
You can use
/active
or
/away
to mark yourself as active or away.
You can put yourself in Do Not Disturb mode with the
/dnd
command. You can also specify the time using
/dnd [some description of time]
. For example, using
/dnd 11:50
, you can switch on the Do Not Disturb session till 11:50.
You can set a reminder to someone or a channel:
/remind [@someone or #channel] [what] [when]
. For example:
/remind @johndoe “Give me permissions to the docs” 19:40
You can create a poll using
/poll “question” “answer1” “answer2” “answer3” …
. For example,
/poll “What should I buy?” “Apple” “Orange”
