Sonia Campanini is assistant professor of Film Culture in the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, where she directs the graduate program Film Culture: Archiving, Programming, Presentation. Her research interests focuses on film archiving and film curatorship, with a special focus on the material, technological, aesthetic and memorial dimensions of audio-visual heritage in a transnational perspective. She co-edited the publication L’archivio/ The Archive and published in Film Studies, Music and The Moving Image, Journal of Film Preservation, The Moving Image. Her upcoming book Film Sound in Preservation and Presentation analyses the sonic dimension of film in relation to preservation and restoration practices and proposes a conceptual definition of film sound based on the concept of trace, material form and performance. She is currently Principal Investigator in the interdisciplinary project CEDITRAA Cultural Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation in Africa and Asia. Her current research project Remaking Nollywood: Networks of Circulations and Memory Constructions looks at how Nigerian contemporary film and audiovisual production is reviving and reappropriating its own film heritage of the Video Nollywood Era through remakes and sequels.

What is the nature of film sound? How does this nature change through time? How can film sound be conceptually defined? To address these issues, this work assumes the perspective of film preservation and presentation practices, describing the preservation of early sound systems, as well as the presentation of film sound in the spaces provided by film heritage institutions. The preservation and presentation practices analyzed bring different dimensions of film sound to the fore, such as its material, human, technologi- cal, institutional, experiential, and memorial dimensions. The definition of film sound is constructed around the concepts of material form, trace, and performance, which explain its transitory nature and its many facets.

Self-driving cars have long been depicted in cinematic narratives, across genres from science fiction films to fantasy films. In some cases, a self-driving car is personified as one of the main characters. This article examines cinematic representations and imaginaries in order to understand the development of the self-driving technology and its integration in contemporary societies, drawing on examples such as The Love Bug, Knight Rider, Minority Report and I, Robot. Conceptually and methodologically, the article combines close readings of films with technological concerns and theoretical considerations, in an attempt to grasp the entanglement of cinematographic imaginaries, audiovisual technologies, artificial intelligence and human interactions that characterise the introduction of self-driving cars in contemporary societies. Imagine opening the gates to a vault full of media apparatuses and letting loose thirty-two international media scholars and professionals on its heterogeneous content... Exposing the Film Apparatus collects the results of such an experiment. This book addresses the keen awareness of the prominence of media technologies in our culture in the last two centuries, while also showing how such an awareness is impacting the curatorial consciousness of those working in film archives, technology, and media museums today.
