The author has been hired by the subcontractors to perform the design development of the original project and to develop a precise geometry of tessellation and a strategy for fabricating efficiently the wooden panels and the corresponding metal substructure of the cladding surfaces by preparing the geometry for direct CNC fabrication of both for a total amount of approximately 4,800 unique interior panels and 2,400 unique exterior panels. The optimization process of geometry has been conducted in parallel on rebuilding the original surface for curvature continuity and on verifying local conditions through custom tools developed within Rhinoceros to control and generate several tessellation options and comput...

The paper presents a reflection on the contribution provided by the Research Unit of Roma Tre University Department of Architecture to the EHHUR project, selected within the New European Bauhaus (NEB) program. Can design contribute to the construction of a new awareness on the topics of energy transition? Does it make sense to imagine new devices able to build spaces acting as enabling interfaces of virtuous behaviours? Moving from these questions the work has developed a methodology to support Municipalities and local communities in seven European cities to develop interventions in public spaces and buildings according to the three NEB principles of beautiful, sustainable, together. The experience challenges the role of architectural design in transitioning from a phase of abstract modeling of standardised solutions to applying the principles identified into tangible spaces and concrete contexts.

The process will be used as key for discussing the dynamic relationship between variation, design option and analysis, in relation to the richness of our design culture. Digital Bridges This paper covers the design, development and fabrication process of a prototype for a lamp called "Nagashima!". The whole process worked as an experiment in "digital bridges" between different software. 1 With the term "digital bridge" we mean a procedure that establishes a dialogue between two or more software programs, allowing the transfer of data between them in a fluid and bi-directional manner. This means that every change introduced in one of them is easily viewable and noticeable in the other one or ones. This link challenges the usual method that confines each research or work within its own domain, as well as, of course, the software package associated to it.

This paper will explore a different path, where the user is highly involved in home management and they use a careful strategy based on a highly efficient passive behavior of the building, developed in the context of the Solar Decathlon competition, within the MED in Italy prototype. This strategy relies on a web-based "Dwelling Black Box", where all data on the house behavior have been sent to and saved on a database, building up a timeline of house-living, aimed at raising awareness of inhabitants on consequences of their actions. The interface has been developed with two focuses in particular: a 3D web interface, based on WebGL open standard, and the integration into a Content Management Framework, allowing multiple houses to be investigated as nodes of a social network of homes, where behavior and performance data can be compared and exchanged. Everything is aimed at bringing back into a contemporary context the awareness and know-how of our grandmothers, who knew very well how to operate their homes: from "domotics" to "grandmothics".

Nevertheless, the ambitious European decarbonization targets require this building stock to be renovated, making energy assessment a key priority. In line with this goal, the following study explores a more simplified and automatic framework to generate a residential building energy model (BEM). The paper’s approach is based on the concept of urban building energy modelling (UBEM) archetypes or building prototypes and is customized according to the principles of dynamic simulations performed in the existing BEM software, Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment IES VE, and Solemma Open Studio. Therefore, based on three real starting inputs, a prototype database (DB) of assigned inputs is generated, i.e., an input matrix, using Google Maps as a geometry source. Other data are drawn from tabular DB. The proposed appr...
