For adminship requests on this wiki see Requests for adminship. Completed requests are archived.

Requests for permissions is a page to ask for sysop/admin or bureaucrat access to any Wikimedia wiki where no local means exist to do so yet. A steward will only give you access if your wiki has no bureaucrats (someone who can make sysops). If your wiki has a bureaucrat, please use the requests for adminship page on your own wiki instead.

You can also ask for a bot flag here.

For urgent access (to combat ongoing large-scale vandalism), you may ask on the #wikimedia or #wikimedia-tech IRC channels instead.

All requests presented here will be archived, after they are processed.

Please add information in the header for which language do you want your sysop/bureaucrat status. Please note that all adminships are subject to approval by the community. If you are granted adminship and a complaint is later filed against you, this may be revoked immediately pending a vote (like

) to ensure the community on your wiki supports your request.

Don't forget to inform your local community that you're requesting this status, and link to the appropriate request from this page. A

steward

will inform you when you have been made an admin/bureaucrat.

May I request the CheckUser flag for myself on enbooks? It would help us greatly with our attempts to stop the ongoing AP vandalism. - Aya T C 17:46, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I do not support that. There is currently a privacy policy very little respected by anyone, and supposingly, this tool is only accessible to one arbcom member and Tim. We are far from the account. So, if we change this, we must absolutely change first the privacy policy not to claim we do not do certain things that are in reality done routinely. Either way will be fine by me, but claims on our privacy policy should be respected. Aya, this is not personal, this is policy. Anthere 07:01, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This seems a little more contentious than I originially supposed. My reasoning for requesting this is, as per m:Privacy policy: Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers. If you wish to U-turn this policy, that is fine also, and I shall withdraw my request. In the past I had been taking each case of AP vandalism (which happens quite regularly) to Brion VIBBER (or another one of the admin-dudes) who released the IP info as per this policy, but I got the impression he was getting a bit fed up with my frequent requests, so it was suggested by another one of the admin-dudes (I forget which), that I should apply for this flag. Also, I don't consider this a personal attack at all, and you are right to be concerned, since the page CheckUser seems to read more like a discussion page than a policy document, and is thus unclear as to when this flag should be granted, and under what circumstances it should be used. It might be suggested to wait until this document is more clearly defined, but since no-one is actually personally responsible for maintaining this document, it may never happen. - Aya T C 16:54, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please list examples where the privacy policy is not respected? I do not remember any cases, since the privacy policy became official, where information was given out in violation of it. -- Jeronim 08:57, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Let me explain more. Here are some bits of from the m:privacy policy which are currently of my concern :

When using a pseudonym, your IP address will not be available to the public, but it will be stored on the wiki servers for a relatively short amount of time. Thus it will be available to developers and may be released under certain circumstances (see below).

Below mentions It is the policy of Wikimedia that personally identifiable data collected in the server logs will not be released by the developers who have access to it, except as follows: In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement

  • With permission of the affected user
  • To Jimbo Wales, his legal counsel, or his designee, when necessary for investigation of abuse complaints.
  • Where the information pertains to page views generated by a spider or bot and its dissemination is necessary to illustrate or resolve technical issues.
  • Where the user has been vandalising articles or persistently behaving in a disruptive way, data may be released to assist in the targeting of IP blocks, or to assist in the formulation of a complaint to relevant Internet Service Providers
  • Where it is reasonably necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of the Wikimedia Foundation, its users or the public.

Wikimedia policy does not permit public distribution of such information under any circumstances, except as described above.

Now, the line might be between what we qualify as "public release" to "release to some editors". But I already witnessed myself one case where an ip check was made on a user who was hardly disruptive and did not qualify as vandal, he was not told an ip check was made on him, and the request was simply done by an admin. This is frankly very borderline with our privacy policy. So, I think that before giving any check user rights to ANYONE (and this include stewards as well) we must clarify what is okay to do and not okay to do and under which circonstances. Or we need to update the privacy policy to indicate ip checks may be done with very limited restrictions. If the community is okay with this, then why not, but we should not write something and do another. Please see what is currently written on the check user page as well. Anthere 09:42, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Strongly oppose. After a discussion on IRC I got the impression that Aya is misunderstanding the purpose of checkuser and is not (yet) able to handle this feature in a responsible manner. --Elian 14:58, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You can hardly blame the misunderstanding if you take the time to read how vague the page CheckUser actually is. But since your strong opposition would imply that this page makes perfect sense to you, perhaps you wouldn't mind clarifying it for the rest of us. See also Brion's first comment on bugzilla:1 - Aya T C 00:54, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Datrio agreed to make a draft of a policy under which a group of editors from one project could ask to a steward to check an editor ip. I think this could be a good solution Anthere 15:41, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but I can get this infomation more quickly by asking for it in #wikimedia-tech. At least one of the people in there is actually paid money to take on the responsibility for providing this information, whereas (as far as I am aware) stewards are merely volunteers and have no responsibilities at all, thus they can all go on an indefinite Wikibreak if they like. But I could be wrong. - Aya T C 01:11, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Brion's is absolutely not bound to give you this information and is not paid for this task. I also trust he will give it to you only for cases of vandalism. Which is precisely the problem at stack. Brion or stewards (who are just as trusted than Brion) can at least ensure this tool is not abused and used strictly to fight vandalism. Anthere 06:58, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I would only ask in cases of vandalism (this is the whole context of this thread). I don't care about sock-puppetry (which was the original, rather pathetic, reason for introducing this feature). We have far more sane ways of dealing with this, which is to judge disagreements not by the the number of "votes", but the reasoning behind said "votes". A "me-too vote" which is merely "I agree with Bob", is not weighed very highly. We never claimed to be a "direct democracy". I'm making this request to help prevent vandalism, thus your hinderences on this request encourage vandalism. I submit that this attitude makes you a vandal by proxy. - Aya T C 15:28, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of access

Self-de-adminship, or removal of bot flags from your bot can be requested here, and will be granted immediately. You may be asked to prove you are the same user on meta as on your local wiki first, by putting information on your talk page on your local wiki, that you're requesting de-adminship. To request the removal of sysop access from another user, please gain consensus on this on your own wiki first. All discussion must be kept on your local wiki. When it is finished and there is a community consensus to desysop a user, a trusted person from that wiki should just provide a link here to the discussion and a very brief explanation of what the results of that were.

To register a bot, please mention its name and the local wiki on which it will work here and make a public announcement about your intention on the local wiki and add a link to this annoucement here. The status will be given if no one will oppose your request.

Warning: for some big wikipedias, such as en:, you will need to specifically request an authorization over there. See en:Wikipedia talk:Bots for approval by a sysop and then ask for the bot flag here. Bot policy on Wiktionary (in particular en.wiktionary) is under discussion so bots should not be made without approval of the appropriate wiki. See Beer parlour.
