Summary
Mozilla’s current aspiration is to ‘do for AI what we did for the web’
. We will do this by helping to build a tech ecosystem where power is decentralized and AI is built with human agency at its core. And we will measure Mozilla’s progress against two metrics: (a) are we building AI that puts humanity first? (b) are we able to radically diversify our sources of revenue? This is our double bottom line.

Mozilla portfolio
In order to ‘do for AI what we’ve done for the web’, Mozilla is building out a portfolio of mission driven nonprofits and companies to prove it is possible to build and use AI in ways that advance the values in our Manifesto.
The Mozilla portfolio is owned and managed by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, which has two distinct teams and functions:
Mozilla.org Team
: drives overall strategy and direction of Mozilla’s portfolio
Core Mozilla Foundation Team
: drives philanthropic programs and advocacy
Individual companies and funds in the core portfolio include:
Mozilla Corporation
— Firefox and associated products
MZLA
— Thunderbird and associated products
Mozilla.ai
— open source AI for developers
Mozilla Data Collective
— ethical data marketplace
Mozilla Ventures
— funding other mission-driven tech companies
These are all independent organizations under the banner of the Mozilla Foundation — united by a commitment to the Mozilla Manifesto and the goals outlined the Mozilla Portfolio Strategy. Each has its own board of directors.
Mozilla’s extended portfolio also includes over
50 responsible tech companies in the Mozilla Ventures portfolio
. Wherever possible, we try to support and work with these companies.
Why this portfolio approach?
The idea is to create an
AI era version of Mozilla inspired by our original vision
: not to be the primary coders of a different future, but rather to ‘... function as a switchboard, facilitating the cooperation of the thousands of participants out on the net. And (to) assemble the fruit of that labor in one place.” We believe this is the best and most likely path to building the kind of momentum needed to push AI — and the next wave of internet technologies that follow it — in a different direction.
Aligned Mozilla and Community Project Tracker
The following is an incomplete and evolving list of Mozilla and community initiatives that align with the three themes in the Mozilla Portfolio Strategy. (Our Open Source AI Strategy is
here.
FYI,
Mozilla had a similar list when it first started
. The things on this list eventually evolved into Firefox, Thunderbird and key technical components of the Web 2.0 era.
