The Hellenic ESG Barometer - ACG 150
The Hellenic ESG Barometer
The
Hellenic ESG Barometer
is a pioneering initiative that examines how sustainability (broadly defined) is understood and practiced across the Greek business landscape. It is led by the
Theodore Papalexopoulos Chair in Sustainability
at
Alba Graduate Business School
the
Center of Excellence in Food, Tourism & Leisure (CoEFTL)
and the
Center of Excellence in Sustainability (CoES)
—all part of
The American College of Greece (ACG)
. Launched in 2024 by the Theodore Papalexopoulos Chair in Sustainability, the Barometer is a
biennial research project
, with data collected every second of December. It is supported by
ACG’s Office of Sustainability – Public Affairs
It is designed with four core objectives:
To assess and compare
the perceptions of two key stakeholder groups—
employees
and the
general public
—regarding the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategies and performance of companies in Greece. Understanding how stakeholders evaluate corporate ESG actions is key to advancing meaningful sustainability accountability and impact.
To evaluate stakeholder priorities
related to the
UN
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
, identifying which areas of sustainability matter most to the general Greek public and how these priorities evolve over time.
To provide firms and public policymakers
with evidence-based insights that support informed dialogue with stakeholders, and guide the development of more effective and responsive ESG policies.
To promote academic research
on the
social evaluations of firms and their ESG actions
, contributing to a deeper understanding of how businesses are perceived in relation to their environmental and societal responsibilities.
Essentially, the Hellenic ESG Barometer aspires
to assess
longitudinally
the (social and environmental)
legitimacy
of firms. This focus highlights the evolving societal expectations around corporate conduct and sustainability.
By integrating rigorous academic research with real-world relevance, the Hellenic ESG Barometer aims to strengthen the national ESG discourse and promote stakeholder engagement. Ultimately, the Barometer seeks to cultivate a
culture of measurement
—one that captures how stakeholders interpret and evaluate the relationship between business, society, and the natural environment.
