Research paper thumbnail of Analyzing the evolution of concentration within containerized transport chains through a circuitist approach: The role of innovations in accelerating the circuits of liner and container terminal operators

While transport chains become the media of industrial circulation facilitating the augmented reproduction of industrial capital, transport is in itself a distinct sphere of investment, which ultimately opts to ensure its self-expansion. By employing Marx’s circuit formula M C M , we investigate how the pace of reproduction of transport capital affects the evolution of concentration process in containerized supply chains within the context of
contemporary capitalist development. Additionally, by adjusting the circuit for the case of liner shipping and terminal operators, the impact of transport innovations in the attached media functions of transport
actors and hence in the velocity of their circuits, is examined. Analysis indicates that innovations, act as catalysts in accelerating the circuits of transport actors, reinforcing the concentration process within the sphere of circulation.

This work embarks on an effort to explore the boundaries, provide a holistic view, and establish a knowledge map of contemporary research in the field of port externalities and impacts, by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) by carrying out a three-stage procedure (planning, execution, and reporting), enhancing objectivity, while limiting errors and bias. The literature under study pertains to research domains focusing on: (a) identifying port externalities and impacts, (b) utilizing metrics and indicators to measure and quantify the positive or negative impact of port externalities, and (c) promoting an inclusive framework for sustainable port development. Our results include, among others, the classification of methodologies and particularly, of indicators established per type of externalit...

Evolutions in liner shipping as well as in terminal operations have led to a process of reorganization in both respective markets, increasing the concentration of market players. To this end, the aim of this paper is to investigate whether these concentration and centralization phenomena observed in the above markets extend also over the port phase, with selected ports concentrating large shares of container volumes. By employing several concentration methodologies, namely the CR4 and CR8, the HHI, the Gini Coefficient and the Lorenz concentration curves, as well as a Shift Share analysis, we investigate the evolution of concentration levels in U.S West and East Co...

Within the maritime sector, while literature on innovation is expanding, issues related to the importance of intangible assets, such as patenting, for the participant firms of the industry remain unaddressed. Utilizing innovational frameworks and patent data withdrawn from European Patent Organization’s (EPO’s) database, the aim of this paper is to investigate the innovative level, in terms of patents granted, of incumbent market actors in liner shipping. Apart from patent counts, this exercise sheds light on the areas to which these patents apply, providing a classification while also investigating additional attributes which relate to patent citations, investors and applicants. Although results indicate a varying degree of utilization of the patenting system amongst liner carriers, they nonetheless affirm to some extent that knowledge creat...

As our results indicate, contrary to prior studies conducted, the U.S port ranges have evolved from deconcentrated towards, highly and moderately concentrated respectively. As such, results are relevant for policy makers and port experts, as they provide an up to date picture of the U.S port ranges.

The exploitation of economies of scale which led to cost advantages, along with the diversification of the product and the inclusion of imaginative amenities and itineraries on behalf of the cruise lines, helped in the development of a mass cruise market which attracted the interest of a wider and more diversified clientele. This popularization has not only increased the profitability of cruise lines but also the economic benefits enjoyed by the host countries that accommodate them. Recent literature has highlighted the significant contribution of cruise tourism to local communities generating added income, employment and increasing welfare. As, the industry is expected to continue to grow and expand to new unexplored markets in the near future, these effects will also be magnified allowing more communities to benefit from the benefits generated by the cruise industry. This thesis examines the Greek cruise market and its potential, with a particular emphasis on the case of the two Ionian Islands, Corfu and Cephalonia. Our aim is on the one hand to estimate the economic impact generated by the cruising industry to the local communities of the two islands, while one the other hand to identify the factors that the latter should consider in their effort to emerge as major cruise destinations in the Mediterranean cruise market. Its contribution is to provide quantifiable estimates with regard to the average cruise passengers’ expenditures on these islands and to emerge those characteristics (infrastructure, facilities and services provided) which are necessary for the satisfaction of both cruise lines and their passengers. Our estimations illustrate the considerable economic impact generated for the local communities of Corfu and Cephalonia as cruisers spent on average 66.6 and 29.3 euro respectively. However, the deficiencies presented in the services offered are still evident denoting that cruise ports along with their cities should initiate an immediate effort to rectify them. The framework which analyses the strengths and weaknesses of each destination can, in principle be used, to develop an overall cruise strategy for local communities which would lead to the enhancement of the overall product offered. The conclusions are relevant for policy makers, as they illustrate and quantify the results of the development of cruise tourism in the region of Ionian Islands while propose some recommendations that could be taken into consideration. The development of a strong and sustainable cruise market is of imperative importance for the local communities and highly depends on implemented polices; in this respect, our research aims in helping them to this direction.

While most of the research addresses this issue by highlighting the need for re-positioning and redefining the role of the port within the supply chains, not much attention has been given as to which are those regulatory bodies that will monitor port activities and which are the appropriate regulatory tools that competent authorities will exploit in order to avert potential actions of global powerful port actors that may lead to inefficiencies, negative externalities and/or market power abuse. To date, a framework for ports regulation on national or international level is still lacking while also there is a need to clearly re-define, update and enhance the regulatory tools at hand, in order to face today’s challenges.
Under this spectrum and as regulation of port activities emerges as a key aspect within this evolving environment, this paper aims to re-introduce the concept of an Independent Regulating Authority while also to provide an in-depth analysis and a classification of the various regulatory tools that competent bodies can implement to regulate terminal and other operators in ports, as recorded in the literature.
