My contribution will focus on the project 'Population and society in Taiwan and the Netherlands' ... more My contribution will focus on the project 'Population and society in Taiwan and the Netherlands' and offer a reflection on how and why life courses in these societies were compared. Moreover, I will reflect on what are, in my opinion, the most important findings resulting from this project, and discuss what kind of research can and should still be done in the future when comparing the Netherlands and Taiwan. As a starting point, the proposal which led to the whole project will be discussed first, followed by a description of the international scholarship that engaged with similar topics after the first ideas of the project were put to paper. To offer a structured reflection, the goals, setup and a selection of the results of the four published volumes from the project will be discussed next. Finally, based on the developments since the last volume was published in 2011, I will suggest three directions for future research, in which I will incorporate the major strengths from the project and the advice given by Engelen in recent publications.
Tijdens mijn master had ik zelf de mogelijkheid om over mijn eigen grenzen als historicus heen te... more Tijdens mijn master had ik zelf de mogelijkheid om over mijn eigen grenzen als historicus heen te kijken door een essay te schrijven bij het zogenaamde Atelier ‘Sociale theorie en geschiedenis’ van Onno. Destijds was ik van mening dat we als historici door het gebruik van sociale theorie een beter begrip kunnen krijgen van historische leefomstandigheden en gebeurtenissen. In deze bijdrage sta ik stil bij het nut van sociale theorie op geschiedenis door – net als de student vijf jaar geleden – verschillende oral history verslagen van mijnwerkers in Limburg te bestuderen. Als eerste zal ik kort bespreken wat volgens mij de kern is van wat wij als historici kunnen leren van sociale theorie, waarna een korte analyse van het leven in de Limburgse mijnen volgt.

Die vanzelfsprekendheid wordt vandaag de dag echter niet tot nauwelijks gezien noch geproblematiseerd. Het is daarom belangrijk om meer aandacht aan bovenstaande vragen te besteden en om dat wat we als vanzelfsprekend achten als vreemd te gaan beschouwen. Om dat juist nu te doen is niet meer dan logisch: gedurende de laatste jaren zijn er veel essentiële zaken veranderd in de geschiedbeoefening: de Wetenschapsvisie 2025, de nieuwe Erfgoedwet van 2016, snelle technologische vernieuwingen, de groeiende invloed van media, en bezuinigingen van de overheid. Allen spelen een rol in het proces dat de betekenis en criteria van waarde verandert. Daarnaast zorgen huidige politieke omstandigheden ervoor dat gevestigde denkbeelden ter discussie komen te staan. Voorbeelden zijn de huidige problematiek rondom de Krim, immigratie en andere politieke verschuivingen, waardoor de periodisering voor en na de val van de Berlijnse Muur langzaam afbrokkelt en er nieuwe contrasten ontstaan. In onze ogen mag dit onderwerp niet langer genegeerd worden door historici. Het doel van deze bundel is om precies over bovengenoemde vragen rondom criteria van waarde een discussie te stimuleren, omdat het hoog tijd wordt om als historici een actievere rol te spelen in deze problematiek.

This edited volume has been compiled to thank and honor Theo Engelen on the occasion of his retir... more This edited volume has been compiled to thank and honor Theo Engelen on the occasion of his retirement from the post of full professor of historical demography. Moreover, the book is also a token of the authors’ gratitude for all the efforts made by Engelen as dean and as rector to maintain and improve the reputation of the Radboud University in general, and the Faculty of Arts and the Department of History in particular, and to connect the university further to the larger academic world. Engelen was for 48 years – from 1970 until 2018 – affiliated with the Radboud University (formerly known as Catholic University Nijmegen): 6 years as a student and 42 years as an employee. During this long period he has held more or less all the academic positions obtainable at a university: student-assistant, phd student, postdoctoral researcher, assistant professor, associate professor, full professor, vice-dean, dean and rector. Although he spent considerable time in management roles, especially during the most recent years, most of his academic career was devoted to teaching and conducting research on the history of what he considers the core of human existence:love, sexuality and death.

Sibling groups are a fascinating research subject because of the ambiguous relationship between b... more Sibling groups are a fascinating research subject because of the ambiguous relationship between brothers and sisters. The proposed study aims to fill in the gap in historical family demographic research by describing and explaining the differences and similarities of siblings' influence on each other's mortality chances in Taiwan and the Netherlands in the period between 1860 and 1940. However, this project will not only investigate the differences between these Asian and West-European family systems, but also the regional variation within these societies. A life course approach will be applied and quantitative longitudinal data will be used as main source.
