Plan Commission
The Plan Commission is responsible for making decisions on plats, replats, site plan review, making recommendations to the legislative body to amend the zoning map (rezonings) as well as proposals to amend the text of the zoning ordinance or subdivision control ordinance (text amendments), and assigning street addresses.
The Town of Danville has a zoning map that designates zoning districts for properties located within the corporate boundaries. The zoning ordinance regulates what types of uses are permitted within each zoning district. There is also an overlay district that covers properties along Main Street and US 36 and applies a set of high-quality development standards to ensure that renovated or developed property will be compatible with Danville’s traditional character and to improve or enhance the livability of local neighborhoods.
It is the responsibility of a landowner to determine the zoning of their property in order to determine the uses that will be allowed.
Under Indiana law, plan commissions are responsible for the following:
Preparing a comprehensive plan;
Preparing a zoning ordinance and a subdivision control ordinance;
Making recommendations to the legislative body on proposals to amend the text of the zoning ordinance or subdivision control ordinance;
Making recommendations to the legislative body on proposals to amend the zoning map (rezoning);
Approving or denying proposals to subdivide land, based upon compliance with the subdivision control ordinance;
Approving development plans; and
Assigning street addresses.

The BZA is the local government body that is empowered by State Law to consider granting relief from the requirements of the zoning ordinance. The BZA is an administrative board that is quasi-judicial in nature and operates more like a court than a legislative body and uses many standards and procedures like the courts.

Public Education
The Danville Fire Department is committed to educating the community about fire safety. During the first week in October Danville, Fire Department participates in National Fire Safety Week by visiting local Elementary schools and day-care centers.
The following is a list of subjects that we teach the children during National Fire Safety Week. We would like to encourage all parents to review this information and practice with their entire family.
STOP, DROP, AND ROLL!!!
Smoke Detectors:
There should be a smoke detector located in every room of the house.
Each smoke detector should be tested and cleaned once a month.
Batteries need to be replaced every six months.
If at any time a smoke detector has failed to perform properly it should be replaced immediately.
Family Escape Plan:
Draw a sketch of your house.
Make sure there are at least two unobstructed ways to exit each room
Mark any room that has only one exit.
Mark primary exits of the house and make sure they are in good working condition
Mark a meeting place away from the house.(ie. tree, sidewalk, or neighbors house)
Make sure everyone in the family knows 911 is the emergency number
Take into consideration any family member that may need special assistance.
Now you are ready to put this plan into action. Remember PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!
Our department serves schools, church organizations, businesses, service clubs, non-profit organizations, assisted living and nursing home facilities, and other fire departments to offer impactful and meaningful lessons regarding fire safety and risk reduction. Types of Approvals
There are a variety of development approvals that must be obtained prior to any construction:
Rezones :
This process is used to apply a different zoning designation and the associated development standards to a property. This process can be used to facilitate a particular development proposal or protect sensitive areas.
The Planning Commission hears these petitions and sends a recommendation to the Town Council, which has the authority to approve or deny these requests. Once properties receive zoning approval, projects proceed to the Platting and Development Plan phases prior to development.
Development Plans :
This process is for projects that already have a legal lot and appropriate zoning. A thorough and detailed examination of the project elements is required before the project is released for site construction and building permits The Planning Commission has the authority to approve these requests.
Platting :
This process establishes a legal lot. There are two stages: primary plat and final plat. The primary plat establishes project boundaries, the overall number of lots, access points, and rights-of-way and easements. The final plat shows each lot's boundaries, roadway design, lot dimensions, and all legal information necessary to determine compliance with state regulations. Once recorded, this establishes each lot's legal boundaries and allows for building to occur.
The
Planning Commission
has the authority to approve these requests.
Boards, Commissions, and Committees:
Plan Commission
Design Review Committee
Board of Zoning Appeals
Redevelopment Commission
Design Review Committee
Tree Advisory Committee
The purpose of the Tree Advisory Committee is to encourage the planting, care, and preservation of trees in the public right-of-way. Project Lifesaver is a proactive response to identify those individuals within the community who have a tendency to wander away from their caretakers. This program consists of a small radio transmitter that the client wears on their wrist or ankle. Each transmitter has a frequency that is unique to the client. They can then be tracked by receiving equipment that highly trained emergency responders use.
Project Lifesaver Hendricks County was formed in January 2008. Several members of Brownsburg Fire Territory received the specialized training needed to use the tracking equipment, and within the first 6 months of operation had 8 clients from the Avon, Brownsburg, and Danville areas. Today there are over 60 clients enrolled and numerous agencies and individuals in the Hendricks County area trained in the use of the locating equipment.
If you would like more information about this program please 317-745-4180 ext. 8020 We look forward to talking with you more about Project Lifesaver.

Annual Leaf Clean-Up
The Town of Danville’s annual
leaf
clean-up will begin on Monday, October 26, 2026, and run through Friday, November 13, 2026.
How it works:
There are no assigned pickup days. Crews will circulate through the Town regularly throughout the season.
Please place your leaves behind the sidewalk, not in the street, to avoid clogging storm drains.
You may place leaves out multiple times during the season—if our crew sees a pile, they’ll pick it up.
If we happen to miss your pile, call us at 317-745-4180 ext. 4000, and we’ll make sure it gets collected.
Second Clean-Up Round:
Leaf
collection will resume on December 1, 2025, for a final round lasting 1–2 weeks, weather permitting.
Important Reminders:
Yard waste (sticks, grass clippings, brush, etc.) will not be picked up with
leaf
piles.
Do not park on
leaf
piles – this is a fire hazard and makes collection difficult.
Do not place
leaf
piles around cars, trees, mailboxes, or utility poles – crews need clear access to collect.
Bagged leaves will be collected if placed at the curb.
Leaf
Drop-Off:
Residents may also drop off leaves at the Street Department:
1010 E. Broadway St., Danville, IN 46122
Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM
Open: November through December 12, 2026
Spring
Leaf
Collection:

leaf
clean-up days to collect any remaining leaves from the previous year.
Exact dates will be announced closer to that time.
