Overview
The Badaling Great Wall, located at the northern entrance of the Jundu Mountain Pass in Yanqing District, Beijing, is the most well-preserved, representative, and famous section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. It has long been known as the "Jade Pass and Natural Moat." As the essence of the Ten-Thousand-Li Long Wall, it has become one of the top destinations for both domestic and international tourists visiting Beijing, renowned for its magnificent scenery, comprehensive facilities, and profound historical and cultural heritage. It is also a key component of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The Great Wall." Situated in a strategically important and precipitous location, the wall is built along the mountain ridges, offering expansive views and distinct scenery in all four seasons. It is an excellent place to experience the grandeur and brilliance of ancient Chinese military defense engineering.
History
The construction history of the Badaling Great Wall can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, but the existing wall structure was primarily built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). To strengthen northern border defense against Mongol cavalry, a pass fortress was constructed in the Badaling area under the direction of Xu Da, a founding general of the Ming Dynasty. Later, it was reinforced and renovated multiple times by renowned generals like Qi Jiguang, who fought against Japanese pirates, forming the formidable and impregnable defense system that stands atop the mountains today. The name "Badaling" is said to derive from the meaning "extending in all directions" (四通八达), as it was a crucial transportation hub in ancient times, connecting south to Changping and Beijing, north to Yanqing, and west to Xuanhua and Zhangjiakou, making it accessible from all routes. Historically, it served not only as a vital barrier protecting the capital region but also as a corridor for ethnic exchange and integration.
Main Attractions
- The Pass Fortress and East/West Gate Towers: The Badaling Pass Fortress is trapezoidal in shape, wider in the west and narrower in the east, featuring two gate towers on the east and west sides. The east gate bears the inscription "居庸外镇" (Juyong Outer Town), and the west gate bears "北门锁钥" (Northern Gate Lock and Key), vividly highlighting its status as a military stronghold. Ascending the gate towers offers a panoramic view of the Great Wall's interior and exterior landscapes.
- North and South Sections of the Wall: The pass fortress connects the northern and southern sections of the wall. The North Section (to Beacon Tower North 12) is the most crowded area for tourists. It features steeper slopes and greater challenges, with the famous "Hero's Slope" located at Beacon Tower North 8 (elevation 888 meters), a classic vantage point overlooking the wall. The South Section (to Beacon Tower South 7) is relatively gentler, less crowded, and more suitable for visitors seeking tranquility and in-depth exploration.
- Watchtowers and Beacon Towers: Along the wall, watchtowers are built at regular intervals, used for garrisoning troops, storing grain, and combat. These watchtowers, varying in form, along with beacon towers used for transmitting military signals, together constitute a complete military early warning and defense network.
- Great Wall Museum and Circular Cinema: Located near the entrance to the pass fortress, they systematically present the history, architecture, and culture of the Great Wall through artifacts, models, and a circular film, serving as an excellent knowledge supplement before touring.
- Cable Car and Toboggan: For visitor convenience, the scenic area offers a north line cable car (to Beacon Tower North 8), a south line ground cable car (to Beacon Tower South 4), and a north line toboggan (descending from Beacon Tower North 4), providing different experiences for ascending and descending.
