Overview

Chishui Danxia, located in Chishui City and Xishui County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, China, is a typical Danxia landscape formed from red sandstone and conglomerate in southern China, and one of the largest Danxia landform areas in the country. Its core area covers 273.64 square kilometers. On August 2, 2010, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List as part of "China Danxia," along with Langshan in Hunan, Danxiashan in Guangdong, Taining in Fujian, Longhushan in Jiangxi, and Jianglangshan in Zhejiang. Chishui Danxia is renowned for its brilliantly red Danxia cliffs, towering isolated peaks and narrow ridges, massive rock corridors and caves, beautifully combined with elegant Danxia canyons, cascading waterfalls, flowing springs, and dense primeval forests. This creates a unique panorama of "red mountains, green waters, emerald forests, and flying waterfalls," earning it the titles "City of a Thousand Waterfalls," "Crown of Danxia," "Hometown of Bamboo," and "Kingdom of Tree Ferns."

History

The geological history of Chishui Danxia dates back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 70 million years ago. At that time, this area was a vast inland basin where thousands of meters of red sandstone and conglomerate layers were deposited. Over the subsequent long geological epochs, due to crustal uplift, fluvial erosion, gravitational collapse, and weathering, these red rock layers were cut and sculpted, eventually forming the diverse Danxia landscapes seen today, including peak forests, canyons, cliffs, and caves. In terms of human history, the Chishui region has been a strategic passage between Sichuan and Guizhou since ancient times, and its magnificent natural scenery has attracted countless literati and artists. In modern history, the legendary campaign of the Red Army's "Four Crossings of the Chishui River" during the Long March has endowed this red land with profound historical and cultural significance, making it a destination where nature and culture shine together.

Main Attractions

Chishui Danxia is not a single scenic area but a vast landscape complex composed of several independent scenic spots, each with its own distinct features:

  1. Foguangyan (Buddha's Halo Rock) Scenic Area: Hailed as "the best-developed, most completely exposed, and most typical Jurassic and Cretaceous Danxia landform area in Chishui and even China." Its iconic landscape, "Foguangyan," is a circular Danxia rock wall 385 meters high with an arc length of 1,117 meters, resembling a giant red celestial book. A columnar waterfall plummets down its center, and under sunlight, the rock wall glows fiery red, creating a spectacular sight.
  2. Chishui Grand Waterfall Scenic Area (Shizhangdong Waterfall): The waterfall is 76 meters high and 80 meters wide, 2 meters taller and 1 meter narrower than the main fall of Huangguoshu Waterfall, making it the largest waterfall in the Yangtze River basin. The water cascades from the cliff top with a thunderous roar, enveloped in mist, presenting a majestic and powerful scene.
  3. Sidonggou (Four-Cave Gully) Scenic Area: Primarily features four waterfalls of varying forms spaced at roughly equal intervals (Water-Curtain Cave Waterfall, Moon Pool Waterfall, Flying Frog Cliff Waterfall, White Dragon Pool Waterfall). Lush bamboo forests line both banks, with red stone paths winding through, earning it the reputation as the "Garden of Ten Thousand Bamboos, a delicate beauty, a scenic area without a single flaw."
  4. Yanziyan (Swallow Rock) National Forest Park: Integrates Danxia landforms, forests, waterfalls, and tree ferns (an ancient relict plant known as the "King of Ferns"). The Yanziyan Waterfall, 87 meters high, gushes out from the middle of a Danxia cliff. Numerous swallow nests are found on the rock wall above the waterfall, with swarms of swallows flying about, hence the name.
  5. Yangjiayan (Red Stone Wild Valley) Scenic Area: Characterized by its red, honeycomb-like Danxia mural stone corridor. The colorful rock wall, stretching hundreds of meters with unique textures, resembles a natural art gallery. The area also features dense bamboo forests and clear streams.
