Synopsis

Daocheng Yading is located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan and is known as the last Shangri-La. The three sacred mountains—Xiannairi at 6,032 meters, Yangmaiyong at 5,958 meters, and Xianuoduoji at 5,958 meters—represent the Bodhisattvas of Compassion (Avalokiteshvara), Wisdom (Manjushri), and Power (Vajrapani). The Milk Lake, at an altitude of 4,500 meters, has milky white water, while the Five-Color Lake displays a vibrant array of colors. As a national 5A-level scenic area, it is considered the last pure land on the blue planet.

Overview

Daocheng Yading is located in Daocheng County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, situated in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the middle section of the Hengduan Mountains. It is one of China's most coveted high-altitude natural scenic areas. Centered around three sacred, perpetually snow-capped mountains—Xiannairi (6,032 meters), Yangmaiyong (5,958 meters), and Xianuoduojie (5,958 meters)—and complemented by highland lakes, glacial valleys, and primeval forests, Daocheng Yading forms a majestic and spectacular natural landscape. It is hailed as the last Shangri-La and the last pure land on the blue planet, designated as a National 5A Tourist Attraction and a National Nature Reserve.

Daocheng Yading holds an extremely sacred status in Tibetan Buddhism. The three sacred mountains represent Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin), Manjushri, and Vajrapani, collectively known in Tibetan as the "Three Patron Saints Snow Mountains." For thousands of years, devout Tibetan pilgrims have traveled great distances to perform the kora (circumambulation) around these mountains, believing that circling them once can cleanse the sins of a lifetime. This religious faith imbues Daocheng Yading with a spirituality and sanctity that transcends its natural scenery.

The Three Sacred Mountains

Sacred Mountain Elevation Represents Characteristics
Xiannairi 6,032m Avalokiteshvara (Guanyin) The tallest of the three, majestic and magnificent in form
Yangmaiyong 5,958m Manjushri The most elegant and beautiful, pure and pristine like a maiden
Xianuoduojie 5,958m Vajrapani Shaped like a sharp sword piercing the sky, the most precipitous

Yangmaiyong was praised by explorer Joseph Rock as the most beautiful snow mountain he had ever seen. In 1928, National Geographic magazine published Rock's photographs and articles from Daocheng Yading, introducing this hidden paradise to the world and establishing Daocheng Yading as one of the prototypes for the Western imagination of Shangri-La.
