Mutianyu Great Wall
Synopsis
The Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou District, Beijing, and is one of the most famous sections of the Great Wall, renowned for its excellent preservation, exquisite architecture, and magnificent natural scenery. Stretching 5,400 meters in length, it is one of the longest surviving sections of the Great Wall in China and is acclaimed as the "Crown Jewel of the Great Wall at Mutianyu." With over 90% vegetation coverage, it offers distinct scenery in all four seasons, making it an exceptional destination for hiking and photography along the Great Wall.
Overview
Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou District, Beijing, approximately 73 kilometers from the city center. It is one of the best-preserved and most representative sections of the Great Wall. Stretching 5,400 meters with 23 watchtowers, it is one of the longest surviving sections of the Great Wall in China. Construction began in the first year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1368 AD), overseen by General Xu Da under Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, built upon the ruins of the Northern Qi Dynasty's wall. It was subsequently renovated and expanded throughout the Ming Dynasty, forming the scale seen today.
Mutianyu Great Wall is renowned worldwide for its unique architectural style and magnificent natural scenery. This section concentrates the architectural essence of the Great Wall, with densely distributed watchtowers and well-preserved walls, making it the best example for understanding Ming Dynasty Great Wall architecture. With vegetation coverage exceeding 90%, Mutianyu offers splendid scenery in all seasons: lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and snow-covered landscapes in winter. It is acclaimed as the most outstanding section of the Great Wall.
Main Highlights
Mutianyu Great Wall has distinct architectural features that set it apart from other sections like Badaling. The watchtowers here are densely distributed, averaging one every 100 meters, with the most concentrated areas having towers less than 50 meters apart, making it the section with the highest watchtower density along the entire Great Wall.
Zhengguan Terrace is the iconic structure of Mutianyu Great Wall, consisting of three watchtowers connected side-by-side. This architectural form of three adjoining towers is extremely rare within the entire Great Wall system. The Great Corner Tower is located at a bend in the wall, named for its nearly 90-degree angle, and offers the best vantage point for an overview of Mutianyu.
The walls of Mutianyu Great Wall are generally about five meters wide and feature battlements (crenellations) on both sides. This design allowed defenders to shoot eastward towards the interior (关内) and westward towards the exterior (关外). Such double-sided battlements are uncommon in Great Wall architecture, reflecting the thoroughness of Ming Dynasty military defensive thinking.

For the descent, consider taking the toboggan (slideway). This exciting and fun experience involves sliding down a metal track from the foot of the wall, making it one of Mutianyu's most popular activities.

Mutianyu Great Wall was a crucial component of the Ming Dynasty's Great Wall defense system, witnessing centuries of military conflicts and historical changes. In 1987, the Great Wall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
