The landscape of Guilin is the most famous natural scenery in southern China, renowned worldwide for its unique karst topography. The green mountains and clear waters, along with the peculiar peaks and caves along the banks of the Li River, form a series of captivating landscape paintings. Since ancient times, it has been praised as "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven."

Guilin is located in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, at the confluence of the Xiang River, Li River, and Qian River. It is one of China's famous historical and cultural cities. Guilin has a subtropical monsoon climate, with an average annual temperature of 18–19°C. The area enjoys mild, humid weather throughout the four seasons, abundant sunshine, and plentiful rainfall, providing favorable conditions for the development of karst landforms.

The formation of Guilin's landscape dates back to the Devonian period about 250 million years ago, when this area was still a vast ocean. With crustal movements, the limestone layers on the seabed uplifted to form land. After hundreds of millions of years of rainwater erosion, dissolution, and weathering, the unique karst formations we see today—such as peak forests, caves, and underground rivers—were shaped.

Geological Wonders

Guilin's karst landforms are divided into three types: peak clusters, peak forests, and isolated peaks. Peak clusters refer to groups of peaks connected at the base, such as Yangshuo's Moon Hill. Peak forests are conical peaks separated at the base, most typically seen along the banks of the Li River. Isolated peaks are single, standalone peaks, such as Duxiu Peak in downtown Guilin.

The Li River, with a total length of about 164 km, is an important tributary of the Pearl River system. The river water is crystal clear, and the peaks on both banks are reflected in the water, creating the breathtaking scenery described as "the river like a green silk ribbon, the mountains like jade hairpins." Taking a bamboo raft downstream is the best way to experience Guilin's landscape. Along the way, you can see famous sights such as Nine Horses Fresco Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal Reflection, and Xingping Scenic Area.

Cave Wonders

Guilin has numerous caves, with Reed Flute Cave, Crown Cave, and Fengyu Cave being the most famous. Reed Flute Cave is located in the northwest of Guilin and contains over a hundred types of stalactite formations, including stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone curtains, earning it the title "Natural Art Palace." The cave also houses more than 70 stone inscriptions dating back to the Tang Dynasty, which hold significant historical value.

Best Time to Visit

Guilin is suitable for travel year-round, but the best season is from April to November. April to June is the rainy season, when the Li River is full of water and shrouded in mist, creating a unique atmosphere. September to November offers clear autumn skies and is the golden period for viewing sunrises, sunsets, and photography.

Guilin rice noodles are the most famous local snack, renowned nationwide for their unique marinade and delicious taste. Authentic Guilin rice noodles are made from high-quality early indica rice through processes such as soaking, grinding, steaming, and cutting. They are served with toppings like marinated beef, crispy pork, and pork throat, offering an aromatic and unforgettable flavor. Other local specialties include Lipu taro pork, Yangshuo beer fish, and Gongcheng oil tea.

Transportation Guide

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport operates over a hundred domestic and international routes, with direct flights to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. From the airport to the city center, you can take an airport shuttle bus or a taxi, with a travel time of about 40 minutes. Guilin Railway Station is located in the northern part of the city, with high-speed rail connections to Guangzhou, Guiyang, Changsha, and other cities. Public transportation within the city is convenient, and buses and shared bicycles are good options for visiting urban attractions.

To travel from Guilin to Yangshuo, you can take an express bus from Guilin Bus Station, which takes about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a cruise down the Li River, which takes about 4–5 hours to reach Yangshuo, allowing you to enjoy the scenic landscape along both banks of the river.
