Gulangyu Island is located in Xiamen, Fujian, covering an area of 1.88 square kilometers. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017. The island preserves over a thousand buildings blending Chinese and Western architectural styles, earning it the nickname "Museum of International Architecture." It has the highest density of pianos in China, featuring a piano museum and more than 100 musical families. Sunlight Rock, the highest point on the island, offers a panoramic view of the entire area. A trip to Xiamen is incomplete without visiting Gulangyu.

Overview

Gulangyu Island is located in the southwest corner of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, facing Xiamen Island across the sea, with an area of approximately 1.88 square kilometers. The island gets its name from a reef over two meters high with a cave in it on the southwestern beach; when the tide rises, the waves striking the reef sound like beating drums. In 2017, Gulangyu was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The justification for its inclusion is that its historic international community preserves over a thousand buildings blending Chinese and Western architectural styles, serving as a unique testament to modern East-West cultural exchange.

Gulangyu holds three beautiful titles—Garden on the Sea, Island of Pianos, and Museum of International Architecture. The island is shaded by lush trees and blooming flowers, where European-style villas and Chinese-style courtyards complement each other. Winding cobblestone alleys are flanked by mottled old walls and delicate wrought-iron balconies. Motor vehicles are prohibited on the island; the only modes of transportation are electric carts and walking. Strolling on Gulangyu, away from the city's hustle and bustle, one is left with only the sounds of waves, piano music, and birdsong, as if transported to an isolated utopia on the sea.

Sunlight Rock is the symbol of Gulangyu and the island's highest point. From the top of Sunlight Rock, one can enjoy a 360-degree view of the entire island—red roofs nestled among green trees, with the azure sea and Xiamen's modern skyline in the distance. Watching the sunrise here in the early morning is one of the most romantic experiences on Gulangyu.

Shuzhuang Garden is the most exquisite garden on Gulangyu. Built in 1913 by the wealthy Taiwanese gentleman Lin Erjia, the garden cleverly utilizes the seaside terrain to "hide the sea within the garden"—upon entering the garden gate, the sea is not visible, but upon reaching the end, it suddenly opens up to reveal a vast expanse of blue sea. This design of concealing the sea within the garden is truly admirable. The Piano Museum within the garden houses over a hundred antique pianos from around the world, with the oldest one made in 1801.

International Architecture

The architecture of Gulangyu is its most unique cultural heritage. After the Opium Wars, Xiamen became one of the five treaty ports, and subsequently, 13 countries established consulates on Gulangyu. Western missionaries, merchants, and diplomats brought their respective national architectural styles, which blended with traditional Southern Fujian architecture, forming Gulangyu's distinctive architectural landscape.

Haitang Hall (Haitiangou) is the most magnificent Sino-Western fusion building on Gulangyu. Its exterior resembles a Western-style villa, but its gate tower and roof feature traditional Chinese upturned eaves and corners. This style of combining Chinese and Western elements is locally described as "wearing a Western suit with a bamboo hat."

Island of Pianos

Gulangyu has the highest density of pianos in China. On this small island of only 1.88 square kilometers, there were once over 500 pianos, giving it the highest piano ownership rate in the country. The island has given birth to over 100 musical families and produced famous pianists such as Yin Chengzong, Xu Feiping, and Xu Xing'ai.

Today, several shared pianos are placed around Gulangyu, and tourists can book free playing sessions via WeChat official accounts. At dusk, piano melodies drift from the depths of the alleys, intertwining with the sound of waves, creating the most moving scenery on Gulangyu. The Gulangyu Music Festival held every July is the island's grandest cultural event, attracting music lovers from around the world.
