The distinctive turquoise and multicolored waters of Jiuzhaigou result from the high calcium content in the water, mineral deposits on the lake bed, and the refraction of sunlight through the clear water. The lakes appear in shades of blue, green, yellow, and even purple depending on the depth and angle of observation.

On August 8, 2017, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake damaged parts of the scenic area. After extensive restoration work, Jiuzhaigou reopened on September 27, 2019 (World Tourism Day) with daily visitor limits of 5,000. By September 2023, 85% of the park's original area had been restored to public access.

Best Time to Visit

Jiuzhaigou experiences a subalpine climate with four distinct seasons. Late October to mid-November offers the most spectacular scenery as autumn foliage paints the valley in shades of gold, orange, and red against the backdrop of crystal-clear lakes.
