Overview

Jiuzhaigou, located in Jiuzhaigou County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, is a branch valley of the Baihe River, a tributary of the upper reaches of the Baishui River. It is named after the nine Tibetan villages (also known as Heyao Jiuzhai) found within its area. Renowned for its unparalleled six wonders—travertine lakes, multi-level waterfalls, colorful forests, snow-capped peaks, Tibetan culture, and blue ice—it is hailed as a "fairy tale world" and an "earthly paradise." In 1992, Jiuzhaigou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List; in 1997, it was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves; and in 2007, it was rated as one of China's first batch of 5A-level tourist attractions. Its core scenic area is distributed in a "Y" shape, encompassing the Shuzheng Valley, Rize Valley, and Zechawa Valley, with a total area of approximately 720 square kilometers. The elevation of the tourist area ranges between 2,000 and 3,100 meters.

History

The discovery and conservation journey of Jiuzhaigou is a microcosm of modern China's natural heritage protection. For thousands of years, this stunning landscape remained hidden deep within the Min Mountains, primarily guarded by local Tibetan and Qiang residents. In the 1960s, large-scale logging activities posed a threat to its pristine forests. In the 1970s, relevant authorities recognized its unparalleled ecological and scenic value and began restricting logging. In 1978, Jiuzhaigou was designated as a national nature reserve; in 1984, it was officially opened to the public as a scenic area. Since opening, under scientific planning and management, Jiuzhaigou has become a global model for ecotourism and nature conservation. On August 8, 2017, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou County, causing severe damage to the scenic area. After nearly three years of post-disaster recovery, reconstruction, and ecological restoration, the scenic area reopened on March 31, 2020. It currently implements a "limited areas, limited visitor flow, limited time slots, and limited access methods" opening policy. The landscape has largely regained its former charm.

Main Attractions

The landscape of Jiuzhaigou centers around water, with alpine lakes (known as "haizi") and waterfall groups being its most distinctive features.

  • Shuzheng Lakes: Located near the valley entrance, this is a series of 19 lakes of varying sizes arranged in a terraced formation. With shimmering, clear, azure waters, it is considered a microcosm of Jiuzhaigou.
  • Nuorilang Waterfall: The widest travertine waterfall in China, spanning 270 meters. During the high-water season, the torrential flow is majestic and its roar echoes through the valley, making it one of Jiuzhaigou's iconic landscapes.
  • Five-Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai): Hailed as the "crown jewel of Jiuzhaigou" and the "essence of Jiuzhaigou." The lake's colors are ever-changing, blending dark green, sapphire blue, and light yellow. Submerged logs are clearly visible on the lakebed, and under sunlight, the lake resembles a giant gemstone.
  • Long Lake (Chang Hai): The longest, widest, and highest-altitude lake in Jiuzhaigou, approximately 5 kilometers long and over a hundred meters deep. It has no visible outlet, yet it never overflows in summer nor dries up in winter, earning it the nickname "the treasure gourd that never fills nor empties."
  • Five-Color Pond (Wucai Chi): The smallest and most colorful lake in Jiuzhaigou. Fed by groundwater, it does not freeze in winter. Due to color variations in sediments on the lakebed and different light reflections from surrounding plants, it displays a dazzling array of colors.
  • Pearl Shoal Waterfall: The filming location for the end credits of the TV series "Journey to the West." Clear water flows over a travertine shoal, splashing into countless water droplets that resemble jumping pearls in the sunlight, eventually converging into a magnificent waterfall.
