Overview
Kunming is the capital of Yunnan Province, located on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, with a downtown elevation of 1,891 meters. Known as the "Spring City" due to its mild, spring-like climate year-round, Kunming's average monthly temperatures range from 9.3°C in January to 20.7°C in June, with summer temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C. Kunming enjoys approximately 2,240 hours of sunshine annually and a frost-free period of 230 days, making it suitable for tourism throughout the year.
Kunming has a permanent population of about 8.68 million (2024) and a GDP of approximately 863.7 billion yuan. As the gateway city for tourism in Yunnan, Kunming is a transportation hub to famous destinations such as Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, and Xishuangbanna. Kunming Changshui International Airport, opened in 2012, is one of the world's 50 busiest airports. The limestone pillars of the Stone Forest, standing 20–50 meters tall, were formed by weathering and erosion over 270 million years. UNESCO describes it as the world reference site for pinnacle karst. The Stone Forest is also the legendary homeland of Ashima from the folklore of the Yi Sani people. A grand Torch Festival is held annually on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, featuring folk dances and wrestling competitions.
Cuihu Park and the Red-Billed Gulls
Cuihu Park, located in downtown Kunming, is a favorite leisure spot for locals. Every winter (November to March), tens of thousands of red-billed gulls from Siberia migrate to Cuihu Lake and Dianchi Lake, creating Kunming's most unique winter spectacle. A statue of Nie Er, composer of China's national anthem, stands on the park's west side. Opposite Cuihu Park is Yunnan University, whose campus features a century-old ginkgo tree avenue that turns golden in autumn.
Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles
Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles is Yunnan's most representative dish, originating from a Qing Dynasty legend in Mengzi City. A wife, bringing meals to her husband studying on a small island, used a layer of chicken oil to seal and keep the piping hot broth warm. Ingredients were carried separately and combined only after "crossing the bridge":
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Broth | Simmered for hours with chicken bones, pork bones, and ham, sealed with chicken oil for heat retention |
| Raw Ingredients | Quail eggs, ham slices, chicken, pork, fish, tofu skin, chives |
| Rice Noodles | Pre-cooked rice vermicelli |
| How to Eat | Raw ingredients are added to the scalding hot broth at the table to cook |
In 2008, the craftsmanship of Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles was inscribed on Kunming's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Many consider the versions from Mengzi and Jianshui more authentic than the local Kunming style.
