Overview

Bipenggou, located in Li County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, is a national-level eco-tourism demonstration zone and an important part of the world natural heritage site, the Giant Panda Habitat. Situated on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the eastern section of the Qionglai Mountains, it is about 200 kilometers from Chengdu and is hailed as "the beautiful back of Mount Siguniang". Bipenggou is renowned for its magnificent snow-capped mountains, pristine forests, crystal-clear alpine lakes (Haizi), cascading waterfalls, and the colorful forests that blanket the mountains in autumn. It is a comprehensive eco-tourism area integrating natural landscapes such as plateau glaciers, snow-capped meadows, canyon streams, and virgin forests. The scenery varies with the seasons: flowers in spring, a cool retreat in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and snow play in winter, making it a paradise for photography enthusiasts and nature explorers.

History

The area where Bipenggou is located has a long history. It was an important stop along the ancient "Tang-Tibet Ancient Road" and has been a settlement for Tibetan, Qiang, and other ethnic minorities since ancient times. The name "Bipeng" originates from Tibetan or Qiang language, with several interpretations, one suggesting it means "a place like a Guozhuang (a Tibetan and Qiang folk dance circle)". Over the long course of history, this land has maintained a relatively pristine natural landscape. Modern tourism development began in the late 1990s to early 2000s. With improved transportation and the rise of eco-tourism concepts, Bipenggou's unique natural resources gradually gained recognition and appreciation from the outside world. After the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the local area placed greater emphasis on scientific planning and ecological protection during recovery and reconstruction, significantly enhancing Bipenggou's infrastructure and service quality. It was officially rated as a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction in 2013, becoming a shining pearl on the western Sichuan tourism circuit.

Main Attractions

The landscape of Bipenggou is primarily composed of glaciers, lakes, forests, and meadows. As you ascend along the valley, the scenery changes with every step.

  1. Longwanghai (Dragon King Lake): The first major attraction after entering the scenic area, it is an emerald-like alpine lake. The water is crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding snow mountains and forests, creating a serene and mysterious atmosphere. A boardwalk along the lake allows for leisurely strolls.
  2. Namuhu (Namu Lake): Legend says it is the bathing place of the goddess of Mount Siguniang. The lake's color changes with light and seasons. A hot spring hotel by the lake offers the unique experience of soaking in hot springs amidst snow in winter.
  3. Panyanghu (Blue Sheep Lake): Named after the blue sheep (bharal) that often drink here. It is an excellent spot for photographing snow mountain reflections. In autumn, the forested shores are ablaze with vibrant colors.
  4. Yanzi Yanwo (Swallow Rock Nest): The endpoint of Bipenggou and the closest point to the snow mountains. It is an open alpine meadow backed by majestic snow peaks like Camel Peak, offering a close-up view of the grandeur and majesty of glaciers. It is also a holy land for hikers and photographers.
  5. Red Stone Beach: In specific riverbank areas, a special type of red algae (Trentepohlia jolithus) covers the stones, dyeing them a bright red. This creates a striking visual contrast against the snow-capped mountains, forming a unique natural wonder of Bipenggou.
  6. Waterfall Group: Multiple waterfalls, such as Bailong Waterfall and Qingtai Waterfall, are distributed within the valley. Water cascades down the cliffs with great momentum, adding a dynamic sound to the tranquil valley.
