Overview

Mount Fanjing, located at the junction of Yinjiang, Jiangkou, and Songtao counties in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, China, is the main peak of the Wuling Mountain Range. Its highest peak, Phoenix Mountain, reaches an altitude of 2,572 meters. It is not only a National Nature Reserve and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site but also one of China's famous Buddhist mountains, long renowned as a "Pure Land of Brahma." Mount Fanjing is celebrated worldwide for its unique geological wonders, well-preserved primitive forest ecosystem, rich biodiversity, and profound Buddhist cultural heritage. The mountain is majestic, frequently showcasing spectacular celestial phenomena such as sea of clouds, Buddha's halos, and mirages. Iconic landscapes like the Mushroom Stone and the Red Clouds Golden Summit are breathtaking. It is an exceptional tourist destination combining natural scenery, ecological research, and cultural pilgrimage.

History

Mount Fanjing boasts a long and rich history. Its name originates from "Pure Land of Brahma." Buddhist culture took root here as early as the Tang Dynasty and reached its zenith during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when temples proliferated across the mountain, incense flourished, and it became a highly revered Buddhist sanctuary in southwestern China. During the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court erected a stele, designating it as the "Ancestor of All Famous Mountains Under Heaven," solidifying its lofty religious status. Over centuries, despite weathering storms, its natural ecology and cultural heritage have been relatively well-preserved. On July 2, 2018, at the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee, Mount Fanjing was inscribed on the World Heritage List for meeting Criterion (x) (Biodiversity), gaining global recognition for its Outstanding Universal Value.

Main Attractions

  1. Red Clouds Golden Summit (Hongyun Jinding): The landmark of Mount Fanjing. The peak rises abruptly from the ground, about 100 meters high. Its upper part is split into two, connected by a bridge. A temple is built on each side, enshrining Sakyamuni Buddha and Maitreya Buddha respectively. The ascent requires gripping iron chains, offering a thrilling experience. From the summit, one can overlook the mountain ranges and sea of clouds, presenting a magnificent panorama.
  2. Mushroom Stone (Mogu Shi): A peculiar rock standing by a cliff, larger on top and smaller at the base, shaped like a mushroom. It is a miraculous creation of nature and has become the iconic symbol of Mount Fanjing.
  3. Old Golden Summit (Yuejing Shan): With an altitude of 2,493 meters, it is composed of slate. It often reveals mysterious reflections under moonlight, hence its name. The summit houses the Randeng Hall, an ideal spot for watching sunrises and admiring the sea of clouds.
  4. Ten-Thousand-Meter Sleeping Buddha (Wanmi Shuifo): Viewed from specific angles, the mountain's silhouette resembles a giant reclining Buddha, stretching for ten thousand meters, vivid and astonishing.
  5. Chengen Temple: Located between the new and old golden summits, it is one of the four major imperial temples of Mount Fanjing. With a long history, it is an important site for pilgrimage and understanding Buddhist culture.
  6. Primitive Forest and Ecological Kingdom: The mountain preserves a complete subtropical primary forest ecosystem. It is home to over 7,000 species of wild animals and plants, including the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey (also known as the "World's Only Child"). It is hailed as an "Earthly Oasis" and a "Gene Bank of Flora and Fauna."
