Overview

Mount Fanjing, located at the junction of Yinjiang, Jiangkou, and Songtao counties in Tongren City, Guizhou Province, China, is the main peak of the Wuling Mountain Range. Its highest peak, Phoenix Mountain, reaches an altitude of 2,572 meters. It is not only a national nature reserve and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site but also one of China's famous Buddhist mountains, historically known as the "Pure Land of Brahma." Mount Fanjing is renowned worldwide for its unique geological wonders, well-preserved primitive forest ecosystem, rich biodiversity, and profound Buddhist cultural heritage. The mountain is majestic, with spectacular seas of clouds, and the frequent appearance of the mystical "Buddha's Halo" adds to its allure. It is a tourist destination that combines natural scenery, ecological research, and cultural pilgrimage.

History

The history of Mount Fanjing can be traced back over two thousand years. During the Han Dynasty, it was already recorded in historical texts, then called "Three Mountain Valleys." In the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism began to spread to the mountain, temples were built, and it gradually became a Buddhist sanctuary. During the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, Mount Fanjing gained fame for its "ancient Buddhist site." The imperial court bestowed inscribed steles and rebuilt the Golden Summit, establishing its status as a sacred site of Maitreya Bodhisattva. It became renowned alongside Mount Wutai in Shanxi, Mount Putuo in Zhejiang, Mount Emei in Sichuan, and Mount Jiuhua in Anhui, earning the title of China's fifth great Buddhist mountain. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, temples flourished on the mountain, incense was abundant, and pilgrims were continuous. Although it experienced turmoil in modern times, the value of its natural and cultural heritage has gained increasing recognition. It was listed as a national nature reserve in 1986 and successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2018.

Main Attractions

  1. Red Clouds Golden Summit (Hongyun Jinding): The landmark of Mount Fanjing. At an altitude of 2,336 meters, a massive stone pillar rises about 100 meters from the ground. The summit is split into two parts, connected by a bridge, with a temple on each side dedicated to Sakyamuni Buddha and Maitreya Buddha respectively. The climb is thrilling, offering views of sheer cliffs along the way. From the top, the vista is expansive, surrounded by seas of clouds, creating a fairy-tale-like scene.
  2. Mushroom Stone (Mogu Shi): Another wonder on the mountain. Shaped like a mushroom, it is larger at the top and narrower at the base, appearing precarious but having stood for millennia. It is a masterpiece of geological movement and weathering and has become one of the iconic symbols of Mount Fanjing.
  3. Old Golden Summit (Yuejing Mountain): At 2,493 meters, this is an ancient Buddhist site composed of slate. The mountain is majestic, featuring the Lamp Lighting Hall. The climb passes by strange rock formations like "Ten Thousand Volumes of Books" and "Overturned Seal."
  4. Chengen Temple (Upper Tea Hall): Located between the new and old Golden Summits, this is one of the main structures of the Mount Fanjing temple complex. With a long history, it is an important worship site for pilgrims.
  5. Primitive Forest and Ecological Corridor: Mount Fanjing preserves a complete mid-subtropical island mountain ecosystem, with forest coverage exceeding 95%. The mountain is home to over 7,000 species of animals and plants, including the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey (also known as the "Mount Fanjing Golden Monkey," unique to this area) and the dove tree (Davidia involucrata). It is a veritable "gene bank of flora and fauna." Hiking trails wind through the area, which has an extremely high concentration of negative oxygen ions.
  6. Sea of Clouds and Buddha's Halo: Due to special geographical and climatic conditions, Mount Fanjing is often shrouded in mist and clouds, with spectacular seas of clouds being a common sight. Under specific weather conditions, sunlight diffraction creates the "Buddha's Halo," a colorful ring of light, a phenomenon eagerly anticipated by visitors.
