Synopsis

Mount Huangshan is located in the southern part of Anhui Province and is renowned worldwide for its four wonders: uniquely shaped pines, bizarre rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs. Its highest peak, Lotus Peak, stands at an elevation of 1,864.8 meters, and the Welcoming Guest Pine serves as a symbol of China's tourism industry. In 1990, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its cultural and natural significance. Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty praised it with the words: "Having visited the Five Great Mountains, I find no other mountains worth seeing; but after returning from Mount Huangshan, no other mountains can compare."

Overview

Mount Huang, located in Huangshan City in southern Anhui Province, was historically known as Yishan. Its name was changed to Huangshan during the Tianbao era of the Tang Dynasty. Renowned for its four wonders—the unique pines, bizarre rocks, sea of clouds, and hot springs—Mount Huang is one of China's most famous scenic spots. Its highest peak, Lotus Peak, stands at 1,864.8 meters above sea level and, along with Tiandu Peak and Bright Summit, is considered one of the three main peaks. In 1990, Mount Huang was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, making it one of China's first dual heritage sites. The great Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited Mount Huang twice and left the timeless praise: "Having visited the Five Great Mountains, I find no other mountains worth seeing; but after returning from Mount Huang, I find the Five Great Mountains not worth seeing." This elevated Mount Huang to the pinnacle of China's famous mountains.

Since ancient times, Mount Huang has been a sacred destination for literati and artists. Historical figures such as Li Bai, Xu Xiake, and Shi Tao have all left masterpieces here. The Huangshan School of Painting is a significant school in the history of Chinese painting. Represented by painters like Jian Jiang, Shi Tao, and Mei Qing, who used Mount Huang as their subject, their landscape paintings have influenced generations for centuries.

The Four Wonders

Wonder Description
Unique Pines Huangshan pines take root in granite crevices, displaying myriad postures, with the Guest-Greeting Pine being the most famous.
Bizarre Rocks Granite weathered into various peculiar shapes, such as the Flying-Over Rock and Monkey Gazing at the Sea.
Sea of Clouds Mist and clouds swirling among the mountains form a vast sea of clouds, creating a fairyland-like scene, most spectacular in winter.
Hot Springs The Huangshan hot springs have clear water with a constant temperature of around 42°C. Legend says the Yellow Emperor bathed here.

The Guest-Greeting Pine is the most iconic landmark of Mount Huang, located to the left of the Yuping Pavilion. This ancient pine is estimated to be 800 to 1,000 years old. One of its branches extends outward, resembling a warm host opening its arms to welcome guests. The Guest-Greeting Pine is not only a symbol of Mount Huang but also an emblem of China's tourism industry—its image is widely used in traditional Chinese paintings, stamps, hotel decorations, and even an iron painting of it hangs in the Great Hall of the People.
