Overview

Mount Taimu, located in Fuding City, Ningde, Fujian Province, China, stands majestically on the coast of the East China Sea. It is renowned as a "Grand Spectacle of Mountains and Sea" and the "Immortal Capital by the Sea." Its core scenic area covers approximately 24.6 square kilometers and is characterized by granite peak forests and caves, integrating mountain, sea, river, island, and cultural landscapes. Mount Taimu is a National Scenic Area, National Geopark, and a UNESCO Global Geopark. Its myriad of fantastically shaped rocks, deep and winding caves, and ever-changing sea of clouds together form a magnificent natural panorama, making it one of the most representative tourist destinations in eastern Fujian.

History

Mount Taimu boasts a profound historical and cultural heritage, with its name originating from ancient legends. It is said that during the era of Emperor Yao, an old woman cultivated indigo (a plant used for dye) in the mountains and was known for her kindness and charity. She later attained immortality and was called "Tai Mu" (Grand Mother), hence the mountain was named "Tai Mu Mountain." During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, his minister Dongfang Shuo was ordered to confer titles upon famous mountains across the land. Tai Mu Mountain was ranked first among the thirty-six famous mountains, and the character "Mu" (母) was changed to "Mu" (姥), solidifying its name as "Mount Taimu." Since the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism flourished on Mount Taimu, establishing it as one of Fujian's important Buddhist cultural centers. Numerous cliff inscriptions and temple ruins from the Tang and Song periods remain on the mountain today, bearing witness to its long religious and cultural history.

Main Attractions

The scenery of Mount Taimu is famous for its "Four Wonders": perilous peaks, strange rocks, secluded caves, and illusory mist.

  • Husband-and-Wife Peak: The iconic landmark of Mount Taimu. Two stone peaks stand facing each other, resembling a deeply embracing couple. The scene presents different impressions when viewed from various angles.
  • A Slate Tile: Formed by a massive boulder resting atop another, shaped like a roof tile. A natural stone chamber beneath it houses the stone pagoda of Lady Taimu, a remarkable sight.
  • Nine Carp Facing Heaven: A cluster of huge granite peaks resembling nine giant carps raising their heads towards the sky, leaping out of the emerald sea, creating a majestic spectacle.
  • Gourd Cave: One of the most typical granite caves in Mount Taimu. The cave is deep, winding, with alternating light and darkness. Navigating it requires sidestepping, crouching, or even crawling, offering great adventure.
  • White Cloud Temple: Also known as Moxiao Nunnery, it was first built during the Tang Dynasty and is the highest-altitude temple on Mount Taimu. From here, one can overlook the mountain ranges and gaze into the distant East China Sea. When shrouded in clouds and mist, it feels like an immortal realm.
  • Sea-Viewing Plank Walk: A cliff-hugging suspended walkway. Walking along it allows visitors to fully appreciate the magnificent scenery where the mountains meet the sea. It is an excellent spot for watching the sunrise.
