Overview

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, commonly known as the "Chengdu Panda Base," is a world-renowned demonstration institution for the ex-situ conservation, scientific research and breeding, public education, and eco-tourism of giant pandas. It is located on Futou Mountain in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, covering an area of approximately 150 hectares. It is not only one of the most convenient and concentrated places to observe the national treasure, the giant panda, and its companion animals, but also an important window dedicated to the protection of endangered species and the promotion of ecological civilization. The base features a tranquil environment with lush bamboo groves, simulating the pandas' wild habitat. Visitors can observe the adorable pandas up close as they eat, play, and rest. It is an excellent destination to learn about panda conservation and appreciate the beauty of nature.

History

The establishment of the Chengdu Panda Base originated from an emergency rescue. In the 1980s, large-scale flowering and die-off of arrow bamboo in the Qionglai Mountains led to a severe food shortage for wild giant pandas, threatening their survival. To rescue sick and starving pandas, the Chengdu Municipal Government established the "Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding" in 1987, based on the original breeding farm of the Chengdu Zoo. Initially, there were only 6 pandas rescued from the wild. After more than thirty years of relentless effort, the base has achieved world-renowned success in overcoming the three global challenges of giant panda breeding: "difficulty in estrus, difficulty in mating and conception, and difficulty in cub survival." Since its establishment, the base has successfully bred pandas over 200 times, resulting in more than 300 cubs. It has established the world's largest artificially bred captive panda population, making an indelible contribution to the survival of this rare species.

Main Attractions

  1. Giant Panda Sun and Moon Nurseries: These are the core and most popular attractions at the base. The nursery areas are the living quarters for newborn panda cubs and expectant panda mothers. Here, visitors have the chance to see pink, mouse-like newborn cubs through the glass, or observe a few-month-old cubs toddling and playing, their adorable appearance is utterly captivating.
  2. Giant Panda Villa Area: Divided into adult, sub-adult, and juvenile panda villas. Pandas of all ages live here, lazily sleeping on platforms, heartily enjoying fresh bamboo shoots, or clumsily climbing trees, vividly showcasing their daily habits.
  3. Red Panda Ecological Free-Roaming Area: The red panda is a companion animal to the giant panda, equally rare and cute. This area employs an ecological free-roaming model. Visitors can walk along the paths and observe these agile creatures moving through the trees.
  4. Panda Science Discovery Museum: This is a modern science education hall that systematically introduces the evolutionary history, physiological characteristics, conservation research achievements, and the base's breeding accomplishments through rich graphics, videos, models, and interactive facilities. It is highly informative.
  5. Swan Lake: A serene and beautiful water area within the base where black swans, mandarin ducks, and other waterfowl reside. It complements the surrounding bamboo forests and mountain scenery, adding a poetic touch to the visit.
