Overview
West Lake, located in the western part of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, is China's most famous scenic lake and a landscape heritage of profound cultural significance. Covering an area of approximately 6.39 square kilometers, it is surrounded by hills on three sides and borders the city on one side. The shimmering lake, rolling hills, pavilions, and towers create a picturesque scene typical of the Jiangnan region. On June 24, 2011, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China's 41st World Heritage site. West Lake is also a National 5A Tourist Attraction, receiving over 30 million visitors annually.
The charm of West Lake lies not only in its natural scenery but also in its millennia of accumulated cultural heritage. Since ancient times, countless poets and scholars have left behind celebrated verses here. Su Shi's lines "The brimming waves delight the eye on sunny days; The dimming hills present a rare view in rainy haze" and Yang Wanli's "The lotus leaves stretch to the sky, an endless green; The lotus blossoms bathed in sunlight glow with a unique red" have etched the beauty of West Lake into the collective memory of the Chinese people. The legend of Xu Xian and Lady White Snake meeting on the Broken Bridge, from the "Legend of the White Snake," adds a layer of romantic and poignant color to West Lake.

Su Causeway is the most famous long causeway on West Lake, constructed under the supervision of the great Northern Song Dynasty literary figure Su Shi during his tenure as the prefect of Hangzhou. The causeway, approximately 2.8 kilometers long, connects the northern and southern shores of the lake and features six arch bridges. Every spring, the peach blossoms and willow trees lining both sides of the causeway complement each other beautifully—the willow tendrils like mist, the peach blossoms like fire—making "Spring Dawn on Su Causeway" the foremost among the Ten Scenes of West Lake.
Broken Bridge is the place where Xu Xian and Lady White Snake met and fell in love in the "Legend of the White Snake." The name "Broken Bridge" does not mean the bridge is broken; rather, after a winter snowfall, the snow on the bridge melts unevenly, making it appear broken from a distance. "Melting Snow on Broken Bridge" is the most classic winter scene of West Lake.

Cultural Significance
West Lake is an outstanding representative of Chinese landscape aesthetics and has profoundly influenced garden design in East Asia. Many classical gardens in Japan and Korea have drawn inspiration from West Lake's landscaping concepts and layout. After the Southern Song Dynasty established its capital in Hangzhou, West Lake became an imperial garden. Through management across dynasties, it developed a unique character where natural landscapes and cultural features are perfectly integrated.
Hangzhou is also a significant center of Chinese tea culture. The production area of West Lake Longjing Tea is in the hills west of the lake. Longjing tea produced in areas like Meijiawu, Longjing Village, and Hupao Spring is China's most famous green tea. Visitors can experience tea picking and tasting in the plantations, immersing themselves in the unique tea culture atmosphere of West Lake.
It is worth noting that Hangzhou boasts three World Heritage sites: the West Lake Cultural Landscape (2011), the Grand Canal (2014), and the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City (2019), making it one of China's cities with the highest concentration of World Heritage sites.
