Overview

The Broken Bridge (Duan Qiao) is located at the eastern end of the Bai Causeway on West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. It is one of the most famous ancient bridges on West Lake and the core of the "Melting Snow at Broken Bridge" scene, one of the "Ten Views of West Lake". The bridge is not actually broken. Its name originates from the winter phenomenon where, after a snowfall, the snow on the sunny side of the bridge melts while the shaded side remains covered in white snow. Viewed from a distance, the bridge appears broken yet unbroken. Renowned not only for this unique natural spectacle, the bridge also carries profound cultural significance due to the romantic tale from the Chinese folk legend "Legend of the White Snake", in which Lady White Snake and Xu Xian first met here. It has become a symbol of love and poetry in the hearts of countless visitors and is a must-see destination when touring West Lake.

History

The history of the Broken Bridge can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, as evidenced by the poet Zhang Hu's line "moss grows rough on the desolate broken bridge," proving its existence at that time. It was called "Baoyou Bridge" during the Song Dynasty and "Duanjia Bridge" during the Yuan Dynasty. The current single-arch stone bridge was rebuilt in 1921. It retains a simple,古朴 charm despite subsequent renovations. Its most famous scenic name, "Melting Snow at Broken Bridge," was established during the Southern Song Dynasty and became a favored subject for painters of the Imperial Painting Academy. However, what truly made the Broken Bridge a household name was the story "Madame White Snake is Imprisoned Forever Under Leifeng Pagoda" from Feng Menglong's Ming Dynasty collection "Stories to Caution the World." This story cast the Broken Bridge as the beginning of a poignant love story, elevating it from a natural landscape to a cultural symbol imbued with human emotion.
