Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, located in Linze County, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, is renowned as one of the seven most beautiful Danxia landforms in China. Formed over hundreds of millions of years through weathering of red sandstone and conglomerate, it features a vibrant, multicolored hilly landscape interwoven with shades of red, yellow, orange, green, and white. The scenery is particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Zhangye Danxia Landform is located in Linze County and Sunan County of Zhangye City, Gansu Province. It is one of China's most spectacular Danxia landform landscapes and was selected by Chinese National Geography as one of the "Seven Most Beautiful Danxia Landforms in China." The scenic area covers approximately 510 square kilometers and is renowned for its vibrant colors and majestic scale, often called the "Rainbow Mountains" or "Colorful Danxia." Zhangye Danxia is a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction and a UNESCO Global Geopark, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to witness this masterpiece of nature.

Danxia landform refers to a unique type of topography formed by red sandstone and conglomerate through long-term weathering, exfoliation, and water erosion. The colors of Zhangye Danxia originate from variations in mineral content within sediments deposited during different geological periods—iron oxidation produces red hues, manganese yields purple, and chlorite creates green. These colors are most vivid and dazzling under the sunlight at sunrise and sunset, layered and interwoven like a palette overturned by God.

The Colorful Danxia Scenic Area is the core touring zone of Zhangye Danxia, featuring multiple viewing platforms. The Colorful Fairyland Platform is the area with the richest colors, while the Colorful Flying Glow Platform is known for its expansive red-yellow gradients. The best viewing times are early morning and evening when low-angle sunlight saturates the colors most vividly.

Binggou Danxia Scenic Area offers a starkly different style from Colorful Danxia. It does not rely on color but attracts visitors with its peculiar landform shapes. Various stone pillars, castles, and walls, sculpted by wind erosion, form countless lifelike shapes resembling palaces, mushrooms, camels, and more, inspiring awe.

Geological Science

The formation of Zhangye Danxia landform underwent approximately 200 million years of prolonged geological evolution. During the Jurassic to Tertiary periods, this area was a vast inland lake basin. Sediments and minerals eroded from surrounding mountains continuously deposited in the basin. Variations in mineral types and concentrations across different depositional layers formed rock strata in multiple colors such as red, yellow, orange, green, white, and gray.

The Himalayan orogeny around 65 million years ago caused folding and uplift of the strata here, tilting and fracturing the originally horizontally arranged colorful rock layers. Subsequent long-term weathering, erosion, and water incision stripped away softer rock layers while preserving harder ones, forming the interbedded Danxia landform seen today.

Cultural Significance

Zhangye, historically known as Ganzhou, was a crucial node city on the Silk Road and a strategic town along the Hexi Corridor. The name "Zhangye" derives from the phrase "severing the Xiongnu's arm and extending China's flank (ye)," reflecting its vital military strategic importance in ancient China. The Giant Buddha Temple houses China's largest indoor reclining Buddha, originally built during the Western Xia Dynasty, and is Zhangye's most significant historical and cultural heritage site.

The popularity of Zhangye Danxia owes much to photography enthusiasts and social media dissemination. After being rated as the most beautiful Danxia by Chinese National Geography in 2005, it gradually became a landmark tourist attraction in Gansu. Today, Zhangye Colorful Danxia is a must-visit destination for tourism in Northwest China, alongside the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang and Jiayuguan Pass, collectively known as the three iconic landmarks of the Hexi Corridor.
