Overview

Zhujiajiao, located in Qingpu District of Shanghai, is one of the most well-preserved ancient water towns in the Jiangnan region of Shanghai, often hailed as the "Shanghai Venice" and the "Hollywood of Shanghai's Suburbs." It lies north of Dianshan Lake, with a network of rivers and canals crisscrossing the town. Nine long streets are built along the waterways, over a thousand Ming and Qing dynasty structures stand by the water, and thirty-six ancient bridges, each with its unique charm, together paint a classic picture of "small bridges, flowing water, and homes." As a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction and a Famous Historical and Cultural Town of China, Zhujiajiao, with its authentic water town layout, profound cultural heritage, and convenient geographical location, has become a popular destination for domestic and international tourists to experience the charm of Jiangnan and a slower pace of life.

History

The history of Zhujiajiao can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms period around 1,700 years ago, when it began to take shape as a village. By the Song and Yuan dynasties, a market had formed here, known as "Zhujia Village." During the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (late 16th to early 17th century), thanks to convenient water transport and flourishing commerce, Zhujiajiao gradually developed into a prosperous major town in Jiangnan. There was a saying, "The three Jings (Zhujing, Fengjing, Sijing) are not as good as one Jiao (Zhujiajiao)." From the Qing Dynasty to the Republican era, Zhujiajiao's rice market, cloth industry, and financial sector were highly developed, making it the economic and cultural center of the surrounding area. The streets, lanes, residences, and temples in the ancient town mostly took shape during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Despite the passage of time, their original fabric and风貌 (fengmao, appearance and style) remain well-preserved, quietly recounting centuries of canal transport history and bustling market life.

Main Attractions

  1. Fangsheng Bridge: Spanning the Caogang River, it was built in the fifth year of the Longqing era of the Ming Dynasty (1571). It is the largest and longest existing five-arch stone bridge in the Shanghai area. The bridge is 70.8 meters long and 7.4 meters high, with a majestic and古朴 (gupu, simple and unadorned) design, serving as the iconic landmark of Zhujiajiao. From the bridge, one can overlook the entire ancient town and the scenery of the Caogang River.
  2. North Street: Also known as "Yixian Street" (One-Line Street), it is the most completely preserved street of Ming and Qing architecture in Shanghai. The street is narrow and long, lined with shops selling local特色小吃 (tese xiaochi, specialty snacks) such as Zharou (braised pork tied with leaves), Grandma's Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), sweet lotus root, and smoked green beans, full of lively atmosphere.
  3. Kezhi Garden: Located on West Well Street in the ancient town, it was built in 1912. It is a private garden blending Jiangnan garden style with近代 (jindai, modern) architectural elements. The garden's name implies "while studying, do not forget farming." It features pavilions, towers, artificial hills, ponds, stone tablet corridors, and study rooms, creating a serene and elegant environment.
  4. Great Qing Post Office: Originally established in the 29th year of the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty (1903), it was one of the earliest postal institutions in East China. The original site now houses a Postal Museum displaying historical postal artifacts. Visitors can send postcards here, experiencing the fun of communication across time.
  5. Yuanjin Chan Temple (Yuanjin Buddhist Temple): First built during the Zhizheng era of the Yuan Dynasty (1341-1368), it is a famous ancient temple. The temple is built by the river and once housed precious calligraphy and paintings by famous artists. Historically, it enjoyed thriving incense offerings. Climbing the temple tower offers a distant view of Dianshan Lake.
  6. Caogang River Boat Ride: Taking a hand-rowed boat is the best way to experience the essence of the water town. The boat travels along winding waterways, passing under ancient bridges, with the white walls and black tiles of the banks slowly receding, offering a unique charm.
